How come you can drink say, 1/4 bottle of whisky (or other spirits) and still feel reasonably okay, but then drink 1/2 pint of beer and you are absolutely pissed? Even drinking a couple of beers gets you more pissed than drinking spirits. How come?

It's got to be a body chemistry thing because I have the reverse effect. I drink a six pack before I can even feel it but after three shots I'm all warm and fuzzy. In fact I only drink spirits on special occasions because it hits me so hard.

Being accustomed to certain types of drink can be a factor as stated above. Also, time of day, temperature/humidity and social circumstances can have a similar effect. Carbonation causes alcohol--and sugar--to be absorbed by the body more rapidly. Women have about 30 percent less of a digestive enzyme than men and tend to get drunk after drinking small amounts of beer. Part of the obesity epidemic in the US is due to carbonated sugar drinks and if you have high blood pressure you should avoid soda pop completely as it can cause a dangerous spike in BP.

Strange..I never get aggressive due to alcohol... When I´m drunk ... I usually log in to the foro and post silly jokes that I have to delete the next day before anybody cites them. This sh1t happens almost every time ... lol

So ...at my own cost , and purely to further the interests of the Foro Flamenco . I will volunteer to try some field tests this weekend .
I will go out into a nearby bar and drink extensively , gargantuan portions of spirits one the first night ... and then ...on the second night an immense quantity of beer .....
And each time I will see which one , Scientifically , gets me the most drunk through a series of scientific tests which shall include ,
1..Dancing 2..Operating heavy machinery 3..Clapping in time 4..Shaving 5..Entering a disco 6..Measuring how far I can pee up a wall,.... and finally 7..Talking to my mother in law
No , dont try to talk me out of it , it just one of these things you have to do for the foro from time to time

Just drink more until you loose your sense of taste. If on the next day you dont want to remember that taste, or hell even the whole night, drink even more. Finally you can even obliterate your consciousness by drinking more. Hope this helps?
Actually I DO get an immediate effect from wine or sherry, but find wine quite sickly to drink on it's own although I enjoy Rioja with a good roast beef!

I think pgh is on the right track, that is if you have been drinking beer and have a couple of nips of whisky, then it's all controlled. But do it the other way round and you go from reasonable to ratassed in 10 mins!
Southern comfort is for high school girls after they've graduated from wine coolers but it's still not an actual drink. Then in college they move to vodka and hyjinx insue.

i got very sick on a drink that was red wine and whisky once, can't remember what it was called.... "Scotsmack" sounds like something from Trainspotting
i used to do stoopid things like drink pints of special brew and scrumpy snakebite when i was 14 - looking back at the bits i remember i am often amazed that i am still alive
Its hard to tell exactly how drunk I am at the moment but the NEXT DAY I usually can tell because of the hangover or not. In my experience, if you eat food too, it "soaks up the alcohol" or something that makes you feel better or deal with lots of alchol better. Beer tends to fill the stomach better than liquor so you don't feel as hungary. But that just a hypothesis as to why beer migh affect somebody more than liquor...on it's own. But 'on it's own" is the key thing. I find that mixing ANY drinks causes a problem and bad hangover or worse drunk feeling. I have learned that if I am going to drink a lot I have to stick to ONE type of drink and I wall be better off. Even two different brands of beer can be a problem. The typical think for heavy beer drinkers is to end the night with shots of something....big problem later. Same with wine....too much might be ok until you mix in a different type of wine or a beer or a shot of something and you probably get sick. Not sure of science but as stated I believe it has to do with sugar and blood.
Only alcohol that results in memory loss for me is tequila....usually don't even remember having them in shots form. Never had that with other alcohol. I can drink very large quantities of beer with no headache or super drunk feeling next day...if it is only ONE type of beer.

i never understood how come mixing drinks makes you more drunk or sick - in theory it should be just the amount of alcohol consumed in whatever drink, but it seems sometimes (in mine and everyone else's experience) like smaller amount of alcohol in mix of drinks makes you worse - how come?

That's what I would have thought too. A quarter bottle of whisky = 10 units or 5 pints of beer.
But it feels nothing like it (until you drink 1/2 pint of beer, then you are totally pissed! )
Must have something to do with suddenly increasing the absorbsion rate?
Mixing drinks like wine and spirts and beer definitely makes you feel megasick like Ricardo said. Licqueurs especially in my experience.

I vote for your Scottish genes. Clearly it has something to do with your chemistry since others get the reverse effect. It may also have to do with the traces of other compounds present in the drinks in addition to the ethanol (aldehydes, ketones, other alcohols--e.g. propanol, butanol, pentanol). I think I get equally drunk from all kinds of alcoholic beverages but many that I like (I like all) give me a headache the next day. Lately I am sticking with vodka and gin, though I keep trying to find a beer in the fridge and then remembering that I drank them all.
