I sure as hell need them. Think about this: when you play a chord your fretting fingers can be anywhere within the fret because the tone that is produced is where the fret wire contacts the string, not where your finger is within the fret. If you don't have frets the tone is going to be precisely where your finger/s stops the string. Now play a chord and see if your fingers are all at the exact same place within each fret. I bet they're not. I think it would be extremely difficult to play chords on a fretless guitar.
