Who else loves Tom Waits?
A bit of an acquired taste, some might say
The man has made some incredible albums - I'm listening to Glitter and Doom now, a mix of live stuff from shows in Europe 2008. His music is dark and swampy, there's nothing else like it.

Nighthawks at the diner and Rain dogs are two albums that I could not live with out. Rain Dogs is the album I always recommend to people who are new to Tom Waits. Of his newer albums Blood Money and Mule Variations are excellent. Blue Valentine was the first album I bought of his, I think I was ten years old when that album came out.

... and his role as a drunk wife beater is a great fit.
With his voice like of a worn out barfly or bum apprarently so. The funny thing being however that he is no such at all. Describing himself as a philistine, who insists on his very regulated schedules and daily routines etc. Getting up early, living healthy and boring, with no booz or partying.
A bit like with J.J. Cale who with his unique invention of laid-back being the epitome of cool musician / music. Yet, he describes himself as a nervous hack, not cool-blooded at all. - His albums besides, especially the first eight ones, being what I couldn´t live without.
I always think who loves Tom Waits must be digging Patty Smith too. ( Just been listening to one of her albums weeks ago, after so many years of no play.)

I do, especially "Swordfishtrombones". Each piece on that record is a gem.
One of the first things I learned on guitar is "Gin soaked boy" because of its effective blues guitar. You can play it with index and middle finger, and put the slide on your ring finger.
Tom Waits is the only musician who can make a sentimental thing subtle, for instance "Johnsburg, Illinois" and "Rainbirds". And boy, can he rock, like "Goin' out west".

Big fan... love his Rain Dogs era stuff, especially Jockey Full of Bourbon. Agreed, Ribot is also a genius. He did a great performance in Jim Jarmusch's movie Down by Law. One of my favorite films.
Mule Variations is also a really great album.
Well I don't want no Abba Zabba Don't want no Almond Joy There ain't nothing better Suitable for this boy Well it's the only thing That can pick me up Better than a cup of gold See only a chocolate Jesus Can satisfy my soul
