Jeez...it seems how Sabicas was addressed by his close friends is even more important than his playing.

At the time I was very slightly acquainted with him in New York in the early 1960s, Sabicas's poker playing probably brought him more money than royalties from his robust record sales.

So, would you say his skill at cards was more important than his playing?

jg...it was not a "considered" list, but just in the quick order the names came into my head.
Anytime I make a list I always forget to include people... eg Tio Flo

Maybe a better idea would be that instead of becoming a "Fellow" after 500 posts or something, you become a "Tio" (or Tia)?

cheers,

Ron

No no no, if you hit 500 posts you should get a gypsy name from the foro house gitano. I'm sick of Pimientito having all the fun!

Great idea! I always wondered why it's only "fellow" after 500 posts. We should have more of these titles:

500 - 999: Fellow
1000 - 1499: Tio
1500 - 1999: Gitano
.
.
.
20, 000 and above: PdL

Hey todd, except for the very first stroke, there are no down strums like normal alzapua, just a rest stroke and hammer, and the chord sound is only done with an up stroke of the thumb.

4687 posts and above get you "Don" title.

Do you know for a fact that he got royalities? My impression was rather that, like many Gypsies, he used to ask for a flat fee up front — almost certainly to his own detriment, of course.

depends on the fee. Some times royalties through a big company can be crap. Remember paco figured out all his royalties over decades after camaron died cuz the family went after him for money, and he realized it was relatively **** compared to what he got paid to play.

cool video, btw. normal alzapua is complicated enough.

No, I don't know that he got royalties. That was just an assumption.

As for money, I saw him several times showing up at various places in New York in a limo, wearing a nice suit and with a beautiful young blonde on his arm--not the same one every time.

When I heard about poker, I asked a friend who played in medium-size games, a few thousand bucks per pot. Fairly serious money for New York in 1962.

"Little Spanish guy, big diamond ring, wears shades and a wig? Yeah, he plays in the big ones--and he wins."

Yesterday I was looking for the alzapua intro to bulerias and came across some pretty old videos. He had less hair in 1937 and 1939 than he did in the 1970s! But his playing in the 1970s was even more impressive than 40 years before.

By the way, a bulerias with the alzapua intro is on Youtube, but the camera is on the left hand all the way through the alzapua...
