the smell is fantastic! but i think it's wearing off. i hope not.
kovach, how are those tuners? aesthetically they look nice but do they work well as well?
im still trying to figure out how to record on a mac. i want to make a video and record in high quality with a backing track. but i will try to get a sound sample soon!

Simplest way is to open imovie. Click on the video camera icon and your camera should turn on. There is also a micropnone icon. Click on it and you can adjust any levels. Hit capture and your away.

hey kris, but how would i add a backing track? i tried recording with imovie and it wouldn't capture the sound. i think it's because i have my external sound card plugged in.

Are you recording from a hand held camera and loading it into imovie?

Imovie should capture the sound with your built in mic. If you wish to overlay audio recorded from another source, you can covert it to an mp3 and open itunes in imovie by clicking on the muisc note icon and drag it straight onto your video.

I am not sure if your soundcard is effecting the built in mic but i have the mbox plugged in and it does not effect it..

im trying to record with the built in cam on my imac. it'll record the video but not the sound. im pretty sure it has something to do with my lexicon alpha being plugged in. but i'll try again tomorrow with actual mics and stuff instead of the built in mic. thanks!

oh cool, i just found the music icon thingy plus a bunch of effects.

You can also open garage band. Create 2 tracks. Drag in the backing track mp3, solo compas for example, hit record on the second real instrument track and play along. Then go to share and send the song to itunes. Video yourself with an external camera and line them up in imovie.

ok, i got it to work with my built in cam in imovie! it was a lot simpler than i thought. im used to doing everything in a complicated way.

i'll try garage band next. i used it once but remembered i didnt like the reverb effects they had. is there a plug in for reverbs?

When i bought my mac a few years ago i also purchased pro tools at the same time.

I therefore never really spent any time with garage band. I'm sure there will be other guys that know more about it than me.

I like them better than the old tuners. One tuner hole in the headstock and the accompanying roller don't line up perfectly, thereby wedging the roller against the wood a little too much. As such, one tuner turns a little harder than the others. I ran into this same hole/roller problem when installing Gotohs on my Yamaha, so this seems to be just my luck.

I have a couple of those tuners installed myself. One in antique (like kovachs) and one in gold. They work fine on both of the guitar that I installed them on.

I still prefer Gotohs or Rubner tuners but the really good ones start at $60 to $40 respectively here in the US.

There's an ornate set of black tuners that taisamlu sometimes sells. I don't recommend them. The rollers are exactly 10mm (rather than something between 9mm and 10mm) so you may need to ream the headstock holes slightly with a hand reamer.

i'll probably do a complete makeover and redo my nut, saddle, and buy new tuners. but in the meantime, im just getting used to my guitar the way it is.

If you opt for lyra tuners (like what you have now), I recommend the Gotohs.

Mine cost $61 (shipping included). I think they'd be $87 with ebony buttons (shipping from Japan included).

where did you order the gotohs? i kind of like the look of snake wood and think i would like to get them in the future. i've had lyre style tuners on all my guitars, i wouldn't mind a change. are the gotoh tuners heavy?

I checked my invoice. Total cost was $63.25 ($57.50 plus $5.75 S&H). You can email him for quotes for any tuner and button combination that Gotoh has. He can email you with catalog scans too.

The higher-end Gotoh lyra tuners weren't much heavier than the original stamped-metal lyra tuners that I replaced. Rubners are a little thicker and feel heftier.

Sounds a bit like an old electric guitar habit - "as soon as I got it home I ripped out the wiring and changed the pickups..."

Luthiers' Mercantile Intrenational is a large distributor, where you can find some of the latest and hopefully better priced articles from Gotoh:

There are two categories for Gotoh 1. Premium and 2. Standard (much cheaper).
Premium tuners are razor sharp precise, possibly the best for the price, and even have a tiny little tool which allows you to tighten the pegs to your comfort level, or when they should need it over time.

Also, you should not need to lower the "bridge" itself, but only nut and saddle. navarro is quite generous with them and tend to be a bit high.

gj and guitarvlog, thanks for the links and info. dear lord, these are expensive!!!
i never have tuning issues so any upgrades would be for pure aesthetics. but that's the typical price for ONE tuner?

the standard tuners actually look nice to me but that's because im used to having tuners with misaligned stamps and ugly imprints of a violin player.

estevan, i never did any upgrades to my electrics. i would just throw them at things and they usually worked themselves out.

as for the felt pen, i think stalker pictures are much better and lend much more credibility.

That is the price for a set of TWO -6 pegs or buttons in the aggregate!!

The standard tuners are substantially more affordable, yet still an expense, which explains why even some of the best guitars often come with such pauper tuning dawery.

However, if you participate in any of the current challenges, I will gladly donate a set of Gotoh as “prize”… but you’d better seize the first place, señor Tiriti !!

i'd like to join the intermediate one although i remember mike saying i shouldn't.
although i'd like a chance to win the tuners, the beginners challenge needs a prize. im assuming the advanced contestants probably already have high end guitars.

Could you please give a few details about the guitar?
It seems to have a spruce top (what spruce/origin?).
Cypress sides?
What kind of lacqueur?
Also, the design was described as a Reyes-Model, but the Navarro-homepage mentions S. Hernandez?
Also I heard people mentioning fine cracks in the top due to climate changes (for example from Mexico _ Texas (dealer)_Northern States). Is this something you found out about during researching?
Of course a short sound sample would be great.

One pair of tuners. I got these.

Often, tuner performance can be improved simply by making sure that the nut slots are sanded smooth.

according to lafalseta.com and the francisco navarro site, the top is engleman spruce. the sides are spanish cypress. it's french polished. the concert model uses the santos hernandez design. the special grand concert uses the reyes design. each model uses a different design.

if any of details are putting you off from getting one, don't let it. after following the luthiery section here for some time, it seems that it doesn't really matter as much what species of wood you use or the bracing design but rather what the luthier does with it.

i have had the guitar for a few days. no cracks so far.

I ordered a Student-2 Flamenco model recently. Anyone know the style this guitar was built in? Both Ron Hudson and Tom Nunez don't specify what model it is on their site. Here is a link.
