Carlos Montoya guitars for sale

Here’s something interesting. Christie’s auction house has two of old Carlos guitars up for sale. Listed are his Arcangel Fernandez and his Barbero.

The Reyes sold for about $14 k -- way above estimate.
The Barbero sold for the same, then another Barbero (not owned by Montoya) sold for $30k.

A good question. The Metropolitan Museum of Art here in New York has an extensive collection of musical instruments, and among them is one or two of Segovia's guitars – I think a Ramirez and a Hauser.

Whatever anyone may think or say about Montoya's playing, there is certainly no denying that he was an important and influential figure in the history of flamenco. And of course there are the instruments – a vintage Reyes or Fernandez, and a Barbero. They deserve a place in the collection of some major museum.

There are other Reyes and Barbero guitars that are already played and studied. Sometimes when an instrument has historical significance, as these do, a museum is a perfectly appropriate place for them.

And looking at a beautiful instrument does not constitute "gawking," nor is every museum visitor "uninformed." Furthermore, one of the purposes of a museum is precisely to inform.

I think the same that they should be kept in a museum for coming generations.

At the moment it seems weird not to use them anymore..because they were made to be used. But Im 100% sure... in future there will be nothing compareable like now. These guitar should be saved. If you use them, they break...its just a question of time. And restoration is fake IMO.

It is when you don't have the money to buy it!
