My Castillo blanca is on the way!!!

After waiting and saving for a really long period, now it's time!!
I also had to sell my previous guitar to reach this point, so I've spent the last 10 months playing on a guitar lent me by a friend.

Now I'm super excited, and counting the days...

In the last few years I have bought two guitars from Paracho, Mexico where Castillo is located. In neither case did I pay any customs duty or tax.

There is a big (for Paracho) DHL shop in town. Both guitars were shipped via DHL to Texas. I don't know the customs or tax situation in Hungary.

When Abel Garcia was ready to ship the Spruce/Brazilian classical he built for me, he asked whether I would mind if he insured it for $300 "para evitar problemas [to avoid problems]". I said to go ahead.

I have been told by a well known and highly respected American luthier, dealer and scholar of the guitar that the common carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc.) will accept an insurance premium for a highly valuable guitar, but if you file a claim, they will say it was a mistake. They will refund your premium, and show you the fine print in their contract saying they don't insure fragile items or custom made musical instruments. But if you don't file a claim, and ask for your premium back, they will refuse. This is a recent development, within the last few years.

Richard, I'm not disputing your account of what your friend says about UPS, etc. ripping us off when we insure shipped guitars since I haven't had the experience of having one broken recently. The last one that was broken in shipping was probably 20 years ago and the repair was completely covered with no questions. However I find it odd that companies this large would accept guitars with declared value in the thousands and offer to insure them at full value while knowing full well that the insurance was worthless. It strikes me as an invitation to law suits and believe me if it happened to me I would be in touch with my attorney immediately. The next time I ship a guitar I will ask about this but I doubt the accuracy of your friend's statement.

typically when shipping instruments fine art jewelry etc the declared value of an item is irrelevant. mostly it requires the claimant to have an insurance policy with a third party agency on the item. The courrier will pay for the cost of the shipment and associated fees but the insurance is responsible for the item

at least that's how it has been for the past few years. obviously there are exceptions.

thank You guys!

Yes, sadly... on Hungary I 'll have to pay 5-10% vat AND 25% tax upon that...

Imagine the moment, when I got to know that..... I had the amount for the guitar/shipping that Salvador told me, and realized, that I have to wait several plus months to save up the extra money for the state...for they doin' nothing.....
I was quite dissapointed. And the rest is still to come until I can hold this beauty.

Salvador told me that guitar will be ensured for it's full value. I cannot have it sent to me as a cheaper thing ( which was also an option to avoid the incredibly high taxes) 'cause in case It's stolen or broken, the company will pay me just the official amount.

I cannot let it go that way, 'cause whatever happens during the shipment, I cannot afford this money in the near future...

so I hope everything gonna go down smoothly!

jshelton--

Indeed, when I was emailed this info, my response was the same as yours. It looked like the carriers were just about begging for a lawsuit. I expressed this opinion to my informant, and he confirmed his earlier statements.

When I shipped my '73 Romanillos and my '82 Arcangel Fernandez from Honolulu to Austin last December, I had a fairly long conversation with the owner of the UPS agency I used in Honolulu. She insisted that the guitars would be covered by UPS's insurance. She further stated that if there were any problem she would go to bat for me. However, she did stipulate that it was UPS who provided the insurance, not her agency, and she could not provide a copy of the insurance policy/contract. And she said she had no personal experience with guitars like mine, let alone any insurance claim on such instruments.

The person who gave me the insurance info reads this forum, at least some of it, some of the time, but chooses not to participate, as far as I know. He appraised both the Romanillos and the Arcangel before I bought them. He is a respected luthier with a backlog so long he has stopped accepting new orders. He has the most extensive set of documentation that I know of based on personal examination of guitars by famous makers. He is a well known dealer. He's the person I would want on my side if I ever got into a lawsuit about the provenance or value of a guitar.

I tend to believe him about the insurance issue.
