val,

Can you or other Londoners fill me in on this...

Areas of London seem to have changed a lot over the past 40 years or so.

Is Croydon considered to be a "rough" area now or what?

I used to work for a company with their head office in Croydon (the building that looked like a giant pile of thrupenny bits ) and it seemed OK to me...wheras I've stayed in some Hotels in Cromwell Road and the area seemed pretty much like "bedsitter land" and a bit creepy...yet this is West London.
Earl's Court was the same.

Islington is now thought of as pretty swish, but I seem to remember it being on the "cheapo" end of the Monopoly board.

Confusing.

Why do some London Taxi drivers say "I'm not going South of the river at this time of night.."?
Is it because it's considered "bad"..or just because it's too far to drive and there is more business by keeping central?

BTW...Out of interest, how is Fulham rated these days?

cheers,

Ron

It's a bit rough in the centre. Islington (Holloway Road) had it's duff areas. Notting Hill was very rough when I moved there in 1983. Fulham is well posh. "South of the River" wasn't because it was dodgy, it was because taxi drivers live in Hendon and wanted to get home without driving all the way back with no fare IMHO.

Thanks Simon,

I guess it's like any big city in that as it expands they start to redevelop the poorer areas

Hmm..my older sister bought a house there 30 years ago when it was just "OK"...so I guess she's pretty much quid's in now...

cheers,

Ron

I used to buy next to an affluent area and enjoy the overflow demand when I sold e.g. from Notting Hill to Maida Vale which went through the roof as the Church Commission sold off its properties.
