I dropped the name, didn't I? I cannot promise anything yet, however a dear freind and fellow attorney who has interesting ties with Spain -who takes flamenco dance lessons religiously- and with whom I shared this ambitious project, knows Tomatito personally and promised to spend his name IF.... if the competition shows some exciting results. Fair enough...

I am hoping we will have no less than 10 fine submissions to showcase.

Thank you Ron and Deniz for seconding my approach... we are staging a much more relaxed atmosphere for this Challenge than the "anxious" one my initial posts alluded to.

All your speaking of whether something is this and that or not finally
made me celebrate

"the ritual"

What is the ritual?

When I get the feeling of having finished a composition I have decided to erase major parts of it in the end in order to intensify the atmosphere.
I only keep the parts with the densest atmosphere no matter if I was content with the parts I dropped.
Was a pain with my first composition but after all it was rewarding.

Now it is time to practice a lot on technical issues in order to do a clean recording...

And finally I'm afraid I have to part with the tremolo part I liked so much.

But it doesn't fit.

I struggled with alegrias compositions for a while, all my falsetas sounded like bulerias in major key. I was majorly frustrated. I just kept checking out more falsetas and it hit me listening to the cante that my falsetas' melody structure within the compás was off. On most of the falsetas I could just push the melodies forward three beats and even out at the end.

Since figuring that out I've made 4 new alegrias falsetas in the fast week or two. Lesson: don't give up!

I used to have a Solea that the middle half of was pretty much libre. Basically it wasn't in compas. It wasn't intended to be that way. I asked a few people and they basically said to "call it what you want... it sounds like a solea." Paco Fernandez heard me play it in a concert one night at the New World Flamenco Festival and complemented me on it and he referred to it as a solea. That put it to rest for me. I broke rules yet it was considered by many people I respect to be a solea. Of course there are some who might say otherwise.

Very interesting! I always used a set of my own falsetas for introducing solea, that were not in compas, but they speak like solea. When i was in spain (ive been there once) i played a little for a flamenco guitarist, and he asked me to teach him these few lines, and even though he had not heard a normal compas yet, he named it "great solea falseta".
I promise to upload it soon.

Solea like Siguiriya is one of those palos which has a clear compás but can also be libre, it's okay to let tones ring longer, have longer rests, as long as you can feel it like a Solea. I notice this often when I try to practice certain falsetas with a metronome, they're not all made to fit exactly into a rhythm.

If he was serious about it they must be really good.
Can't wait to hear them.
