I just wanted to give my two cents, as a silent reader of this thread.

I don't know anything about that subject, but I read the whole thing as it developped. I tremendously learnt about the subject and for me, it was a really interesting thread.

I think also that the fact that they where emotions, conflicts, different opinions made it fruitfull. I would never, in my entire life would want to read an article on the subject by one person. But that thread was gold for me.

So basically what I'm saying is that the discussions might sometimes be painfull, or some can feel they've invested much and had just conflicts as a result, and so on...

But what is unseen and unknown, is that many people read the thread and don't intervene and get many informations. That's the force of a forum like this.

So for me, a great thank you - and to RobF specially, cause you felt not so happy with your interventions. From my point of view, you've given a tremendous impetus to this thread and it has helped the whole thing unfold.

Just noticed the specs here. I have two condes 1998 and 2000 with the aluminum rollers. 35AR instead of 35G. Dark gear/worm. Pretty heavy compared to plastic rollers. (The blanca is literally head heavy compared to body). They were/ are original, and only one tap plate change so far but I know one day I will change tap plate 2 and with it replace the machines with hopefully the same ones. But I was surprised to read there the roller width compared to plastic is .2 bigger! (10.2). Does this mean the headstock roller holes are wider on those two guitars than your normal guitar, or is that .2 nothing important?

Normally, tuner holes are drilled slightly over size. I use a 13/32” bit for mine, which translates to about 10.3mm. If you drill dead on to the barrel diameter then the rollers can bind in high humidity.

Also, the 10.2mm is the diameter of the plastic roller bearing on the aluminum barrel. The barrel itself is probably 10mm. This 0.2mm is a little less than 0.008”, so even if your holes are drilled to 10mm the plastic roller bearing will compress a little and generally the tuner can be pushed in. A bit of wax and a few taps with a ball-peen hammer (sledge will do in a pinch) and that sucker’ll go on.

*edit* OK, I just grabbed a set a took some measurements. The aluminum roller is 9.9mm and the plastic roller bushing is 10.2mm. The plastic bushing is also very slippery so I doubt you’d need any wax.

These dimensions sound like what I’ve measured with my caliper a few days ago.

In the Rubner sets I have, the plastic rollers are 10.3 if I remember correctly and the Teflon spacer next to the plane goes in without help. The hang up is the bearing on the inside.
But I have a 25:1 cello peg reamer and a little ticklish light shaving fixes the 10 mm drill hole to a snug 10.3. The inside hole that receives the bearing end of the roller is a trickier one, and you need not worry about binding it up in humidity because, it’s a after all a mini roller bearing. I wrap sand paper around a chop stick with the chop stick poked through the outside roller hole ( when the tip of the chop stick is in the roller string slot wrap a narrow strip of sand paper around it) then I touch up the inside hole without touching the outside hole. And in the end since the string pull is toward the nuts wee bit of clearance on the opposite side of the roller from the nut frees the roller. It rides on the Teflon and the bearing and if the Teflon and bearing are supported in tension then it’s not torquing the shaft, or not much given the plate is fastened down *with all 8 screws * <ahem>

It was never personal and not too heated on my side.
Contrast is good at the beginning because leads to better articulate the points but at the end of the day it’s a limit for the discussions to grow up in the right direction, imho.
For instance, I own, or I have documented, different categories of Fustero tuning machines througout the years, in different grades and price range: to be able to distinguish them would be a good starting point and a better result.
Anyway at the end of the day it’s ok.
P.S. this has nothing to do with the specific topic of originality (related to the main question of the first poster) I’m just referring to the tuners.
