I believe we already had her in this thread. She was sweet.

Ricardo -> RE: Women in the macho world of flamenco guitar (Aug. 12 2023 14:34:19)

Not flamenco, but a young lady who plays better than 90% of male guitar players from any genre or historical time. I mean there is her then the cream of all time basically IMO. Perhaps young in terms of taste, but holy smokes as she matures she will only improve.

back on page 2 of this thread she is playing the Solea from Paco Peña's Toques Flamencos. She seems to me a very good classical guitarist, not really a "Woman in the macho world of flamenco guitar" - she seems to be firmly in the classical world to me.

Her right hand technique is way off, in the PP Solea she is playing pulgar passages with a classical guitar tech mixture of thumb and fingers (thumb on lower and fingers on higher strings) which completely changes the attack and feel, and she completely omits the golpes too.

she seems very good, and also funny and entertaining in the tutorial [:D]

I noticed in the comments to her video on YT that they all were just about her playing, which should be normal, but it's not. The Paula Hermosin solea vid I watched were as much about her looks as her playing, and that seems kinda "normal" in classical guitar videos of women. I would have expected heavy metal commenters to be more leery, but no, it's the classical guitar fans that are the creepy stalkers! [8|]

Yes agreed, I wrote out a similar comment but it wouldn't post.
Not wanting to be 'bad minded' as my Irish pal Henry would say, but she's a classical player with a classical guitar.
She plays nice though. No bad vibes from me.

No bite

Classical guitar fan boys are the worst. The most insecure about women in music, they collectively act out as the most threatened by women.

I used to chat with Paola before her YouTube channel was so big. She’s a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Sevilla, and her main teacher was the classical, baroque, continuo, vihuela player Juan Carlos Rivera.

Well there could be more than one explanation. 11k views and 75 comments? The simplest is that she, as owner of the video, deletes the offending comments, even critical ones, and leaves what she wants up. That is the simplest explanation. However, I have seen certain videos that garner only positive comments, and she could be at that stage of breakthrough where she has arrived as “one of the dudes” involved for her excellent skill. Not until the million view mark opens up the doors to trolls for this genre. There is an amazing female vocalist Elize Ryd, Swedish, good looking. In an interview she said she receives a thousand d..k pics a day…but wanted to thank all the men out there but apologized that her mom handles her account and deletes all but the good ones which she only “sometimes” shares with her! [:D]

it's not so much trolling and negative comments i was referring to, but the sort of "positive" comments that refer to looks like "lovely playing from a beautiful lady" type of thing. On the one hand you can argue that it's "positive" and there's nothing wrong with it, but on the other hand guys are pretty much judged on their playing with no reference to looks, so why shouldn't women be treated the same? Also those "positive" comments can be so gushing and over-the-top they are kinda creepy, especially when there are a lot of them... I have NEVER seen a youtube comment about a male flamenco or classical guitarist refer to his looks... but it seems par for the course the female classical guitarists videos I have watched. Pleasantly surprised to see none of that with the shred woman, but maybe, as you say, she deletes them...

estebanana -> RE: Women in the macho world of flamenco guitar (Aug. 17 2023 0:05:37)

There is a way you can turn off comments, so many celebrities leave the comments open for a certain amount of time, then they switch them off. Then it’s easy to edit 100 comments and leave the comment section closed. People who are fans still hit the like button.

😄😄

Sorry that's sort of half funny but also pretty dark.
What the **** are these guys thinking?!!!

silddx -> RE: Women in the macho world of flamenco guitar (Aug. 17 2023 22:05:52)

The world is still as f**ked up as it's always been, Stu. Mostly by men. We have SOOOOOO far to go. But we will probably have killed the planet long before killing sexism. I will channel these thoughts into my flamenco. Perhaps it will be more meaningful :D

Stu -> RE: Women in the macho world of flamenco guitar (Aug. 18 2023 13:30:05)

I can see us possibly killing ourselves and perhaps our environment that sustains decent human life... But killing the planet? Don't think we have that power. Anyway that's another thread! 😄

No worries. Captain Planet will fix it.

😂 classic stuff! Wow that's when saving the planet was fun. Ah good times

AndresK -> RE: Women in the macho world of flamenco guitar (Aug. 19 2023 8:07:23)

There are quite a few comments about his looks on this video as I remember seeing many years ago. Some are quite funny, some... and I remember some even wondering about his sexual preferences for god's sake.

It is way down at the bottom. 7 yrs ago. Probably he was in a bad mood due to the broken finger (I remember he said his career was over around that time). As an aside, I was asked to play at the famous tablao in NYC some years before that. I knew who she was and I recognized her (Gohar) in the audience. The show was off the cuff, no rehearsal with Raquel Heredia (I had never met before she came on stage…but I played for her sister often). Very improvised show, but not bad. I did not do any fancy guitar work, just accompanied the singer and dancer. But I was thinking I would find Gohar after and chat about guitar (I like some of her videos). Well, she bolted out of there. Either she was not impressed or who knows what, but I never got to meet her.

As I mentioned in another thread one can't impress girls with special guitar skills with guitar playing.

Looks like she can play 3 finger ima picado at 2:06.

Not very evenly. Odd, as that is one of the easier spots to use i-m thanks to the pull-off.
