Diego is a bad man. I'm generally pretty traditional and old school about my flamenco but Diego gets it and takes it to another level. He's scary good. His sense of rhythm is super human. And his accompaniment is so perfect……….

I have to apologize for my childish language yesterday
and kind of feel embarassed now.
Actually to be honest I was loaded because of a
real life experience with a guy about a similar issue
2 days ago and was kind of extremely frustrated about
his comments towards me and my friend, etc...
and kind of totally overreacted in this thread with
that part of my comment and kind of mixed up everything.

So, I'm sorry Morante. I didn't mean to say you are
that old whatever .... Of course I know you are very
knowledgeable. Preferences in flamenco are totally
normal and legit and shouldn't be a reason for any
kind of childish fight between aficionados.
I love Cante as much as I love guitar.
I hope you accept my apology.

Big respect to you guys for not letting that go any further.

My favorite thing about Diego is that he has great respect for the family tradition before him, and while he has mastery of that material he works hard to forge his own path forward. I strongly believe that tradition is the essence and lifeblood of flamenco, but also feel that the art would be even more in danger without guys like Diego to help carry it forward.

I've been wondering, there was the "big four" including Paco, Vicente, Tomatito and Gerardo (and to many, Manolo Sanlúcar) - now there is a new generation that has arrived and we have Diego and Antonio Rey as the new main guitarists in the genre; I wonder whether they can have a similar influence on young guitarists as their predecessors had on us...
Unfortunately I'm struggling to identify anyone else as such a powerful, taste-defining contemporary source in flamenco guitar, to me many of today's obviously technically flawless young guitarists sound very much the same, with their ideas being more technical than artistical...in my ears the overly sterilized sound quality on their albums take away a lot of the artistical quality as well...

I know and understand Diego del Morao is in a higher level than his father, harmonically speaking. (technically, i dont know. I would like to hear your opinions) He is closer to Vicente Amigo more than Moraito.

Anyway, by far, if a have to choose something to play, or to listen, i prefer Moraito.

I love hearing Diego del Morao accompany singers. He's at the top in terms of technique and taste. But I've got to say that his solo playing leaves me cold. I can appreciate that he is a guitar master but I just don't get it. Maybe I haven't listened to enough of his solos, maybe I'm too old. Maybe someone can tell me what they like in his playing other than just saying he is great?

I just went and watched several of his videos. I realized that one problem is that I can't always tell what palo he is playing. I grew up in flamenco where there were signature cadences that distinguished a solea from a bulerias from a siguirias. When PdL played a solea you could hear that solea sound even in the improvizations. With Diego I just don't always hear that and I feel like I'm floating without an anchor.

we're probably just too old. Once you have your tastes set, it's hard to change them. They are hearing these super-cool syncopations that get their blood moving, I am hearing a mish-mash. They are hearing incredibly tight riffs and variations, I am hearing a buch of gibberish. They are saying this guy is a master on the level of Paco/Gerardo and to me it sounds like 'Paco shreds'. At some point, it's like an inside joke and you wonder what everyone's laughing about.

With enough listening and study, you may begin to appreciate it too! It's also possible I may eventually develop a taste for goat cheese, but right now I just can't stand it!

I think Eduardo Trassiera is right up there. He's much more musical to me than let's say Dani de Morón...

I really think he is one of the best guitarists in terms of following the compas. However what I think makes his father better in terms of musicality is that his falsetas are always easy to remember(I mean you can repeat them in your head after listening to his songs), while after listening to Diego's pieces it's difficult to remember any phrases/falsetas, probably because it's so rapidly changing and technical. I'm sure his music is only going to get better with the years, after all he hasn't been in the center of jerez flamenco for many years?

Diego goes first, as is appropriate. He also accompanies José Mercé at 52:22, which is also most appropriate. I get the shivers thinking about such a cold, sad and goosebumpy night in Jerez... and it's not the weather. Enjoy!

older generations always say these same things, this could be a quote from the eighties about Gerardo/Riqueni/Manolo Franco.... or from the seventies about Paco/Manolo/Serranito.... and I've read old articles where people said these kinds of things about Niño Ricardo/Sabicas....

This is true about the older generation and I won't deny it. The thing about the guitarists you named above is that they are the ones who are remembered from their generations after all the technically brilliant but artistically average guitarists were forgotten. We don't know yet who of the young players will still stand out in 20 years or if they will still be playing then what they are playing now

In February, 1962 I was at the club Zambra in New York. Around midnight Sabicas arrived, with a small entourage and a beautiful young blonde. The buzz went around that he was staying for the after-hours juerga. I said something enthusiastic to the fifty-something Spaniard at the next table.

He replied, "I would rather listen to Fernando Sirvent (the house guitarist, a competent accompanist of cante and baile). Sabicas is just flash and a lot of notes."

I'm betting that people were making similar remarks about Ramon Montoya in 1925.

I don´t mind how many notes a guitarist plays if he plays with good taste, sounds flamenco and does not step on the cantaor. That´s why my favourite guitarist is Roman Vicenti.
