I'm not super-connected to the flamenco world, but it seems to me that most of the stuff that gets popular (dani de moron, amos lora) is pretty heady (maybe it's just what I'm exposed to - being a musician).

I think there were some flamenco-inspired groups that had some non-aficionado appeal (Triana, Lole y Manuel) but unfortunately I don't hear about those kinds of groups anymore.

Still loads of great cante in the Peñas among by aficionados and semiprofesionals(young and old).
Just not for comercial minded peoples...

we guys forget one thing.
many of us started with and liked the things which we hate today and many of us disliked the things in the past which we like today. its a development, specially with flamenco.
there is light music most people like instantly the first time they hear it, no matter if they are muscial people or not ..... but those pieces often lose their beauty pretty fast. then there are things you don't like instantly, or you dont get, or sound weird to you or whatever .... those things (specially in flamenco) are full of beauty which need to be discovered, during your journey.
Cante sounds very weird for people who hear it for the first time.
I am not surprised about the request to "turn it off".
No need to be mad about that. They don't get it. so what. You don't need to convince them to like something.

Yes, I agree.
I was member of three peñas here in Huelva and I played for singing lessons in all of them.
The base is still trad. flamenco, thats what most of the aficionados want to hear. Its ok if you throw in a modern falseta if its short and you´re not showing off to much. The singers still discuss Mairena and Camaron, La Niña de los Peines and La perla de Cadiz, Vallejo and Tio Gregorio etc.
The bad thing is that there are now very few members of the peñas, very few people comming to the shows and for that reasonsome peñas are closed and the shows are of poorer, more local (cheaper) character. Its all because of the economical situation. We are running out of money and expenses are increasing a lot.

No need to be sensationalist. With people like El Payo Humberto still around, carrying the torch of the "flamenco knights of the round table", traditional flamenco will never die. :) Traditional flamenco has never been a mainstream style, anyway!

its so basic,

the government of Spain should do something,

flamenco is their ambassador around the world,

make it popular, educate other people around the world,

let them know about flamenco schools and courses,

guitar playing schools, singing and dancing schools, language,

as well as guitar making courses,

its a benefit for Spain, they can make a hell of money,

tourism, selling guitars, flamenco schools, Spanish language courses,

A government more corrupt, inept and inert you would only find in Africa. They are fascista, only interested in ruining public health and education and driving down the wages of the poor, while they live de puta mare.

The only people who are helping flamenco are members of the peñas. We pay 10 euros a month to the Peña de Juan Villar and there are only 30 socios. There used to be subvenciones but these have dried up. The bar is what pays for the weekly shows, even though the socios pay only 1 euro for a drink. But we struggle along (with dinero negro) and have good cante every Friday, when the people de La Viña drink a lot of cerveza and eat a lot of montaitos y pescaito frito, though the artists don´t get paid much.

Spanish society está en apuros, no sólo el flamenco[:@]

I think the last thing on the mind of most spanish people is reviving flamenco when almost everyone's future is so insecure, and how things can get better, to be honest I have no idea considering what kind of people run the politics of spain and european union.
