Bottom line is its easy to generalize if one doesn't have much experience with the genre...I do find it difficult to understand how anyone who loves the guitar couldn't be impressed with flamenco though as its the ultimate folkloric guitar tradition

I'm mulling that over. I think as I was educated as an architect I place too much emphasis on logical structure. Some one posted some Iranian music and I loved the woman with the plucked string instrument and the way it just flows on and on. Why flamenco doesn't appeal in the same manner is puzzling.

Then you should LOVE flamenco........structure up the wazoo

OK so I'll try again with an open mind.

Which is fine... until you start making the assertion that your preferences are objectively better. Music is the language of the heart, and everyone speaks a different dialect.

You need to be patient.

Are you a fan of classical music in general, or mostly classical guitar?

I must agree you you as I have been listening to and playing the guitar for over 60 years and it never occurred to me that I wouldn't love all facets of the nylon string guitar. But I do love the cante.

Ricardo -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 6:49:34)

Segovia didn't record Rodrigo's Aranjuez concierto because it was too hard and too fast to play. Rodrigo had to compose a simpler concierto for him to play so he didn't look foolish on stage messing up the timing and scales and such. That didn't prevent some other brave classical guitarists from thinking they could do it. [8|] [:D]

over refined tone is the problem?

Miguel de Maria -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 14:59:28)

Ricardo,
that is messed up! :) What's with the fake adjusted volume that makes Bream sound like he's playing a ukulele and Paco sound like the God of Thunder!

Now someone needs to put a clip together showing Paco try to play those South American folk songs next to Bream playing some Spanish folksongs.

When I saw Sharon Isbin play the Aranjuez, I saw she avoided the issue by means of a pick she kept on her thigh and pulled out only for the "raskwados".

Arash -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 15:14:52)

forget the volume, sound, tone (we assume for a second both are equal ;)
check out 0:33.

aeolus -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 15:58:58)

How tough can it be?

Leñador -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 16:30:27)

Lol, Bream can't strum a guitar, only pretty little individual notes haha

Ole small Asian boy! Sounded better then bream......

Miguel de Maria -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 16:40:10)

Okay, let's cut the nonsense about Bream, he's just about the best there ever was.

And let's not forget that Paco is not without his weaknesses. You have probably seen this embarassing 70s era debacle.

Ruphus -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 16:52:00)

Can´t see vids. |0P

Is that the gig when he completely messed up the Aranjunez?

aeolus -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 17:06:56)

Time for some real musical elegance.

Leñador -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 17:24:38)

More musical elegance! [:D]

And you say flamenco is noisy, it's all relative. I love noisy though....

aeolus -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 25 2013 17:37:18)

They have to play loud. It's the only way the fans can hear the music their hearing is so damaged!

Alzapuas, rasgueados(many types), 5 note tremolos, compas, y tocando con huevos , not to mention many electric guitar techniques.

tocando con huevos?

WTF Is that anything like machacado con huevo? Good stuff, but what does that have to do with playing guitar? Point me toward your recordings of said virtuoustic wonders. If you can play Fernando .Sor - Study 6 op.6 A-Dur faster than Eugen Drabynka and as cleanly I will pay the amount of $100 US dollars.

Aretium -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 26 2013 23:08:02)

I find it hard to believe that you are an 80 year old man? Have you never had an argument before? I doubt that you believe you can change peoples opinions so why wage a war of futility upon us I want to read something new and interesting about flamenco.

I'm sure I can play that faster and cleaner than this Eugen Drabynka, but $100 US dollars is little money for that. If you make me a better offer I will consider playing that piece.

Did an 80 year old man just use "WTF"??? WTF is up with that?? [:D]

Tocando con huevos guey! Playing with some b**ls behind it, which I understand you don't even like. I'm no virtuoso, I'm half ass on a good day like I said. I'm just saying I can execute techniques that a classical player can't no matter how good they are. my youtube page is in my profile though so you can rip me apart from there if you like.

Actually, most 80 year olds I know curse WAY more than most young guys. My grandfather taught me almost every curse words when I was younger, along with almost everything else I know.

By the way, I'm glad you didn't accept Aeolus dare, it was a trap. You have a beard and therefore are not allowed to play Classical music, they don't accept that. Crossing legs while playing is not allowed too. Sorry for destroying your childhood dream of becoming a professional Classical guitarrist... It's better for you to know the truth... Things wouldn't work out...[8D]

Aeolus, please don't forget to consider making a better offer. If you make a desirable offer I will record it tomorrow. Normally it would take me some time to study and prepare the piece but since this Drabynka fella isn't THAT good, I'll give it a try before recording the Soleá.

Richard Jernigan -> RE: "Which guitar do I play today???" (Apr. 27 2013 4:27:28)

If aeolus is who I think he is, he exists and he's somewhere around 80 years old.

He's either just a grouchy old bastard, or else he's just pulling the foro's chain.

Maybe both.

When I was in the infantry 51 years ago, "WTFO?" [for "WTF?, over"] was standard radio talk.

Speaking of older guys, one of my great-uncles was a brigadier general in the U.S. Cavalry. He fought in WW I, and went to Mexico with Black Jack Pershing on his fruitless pursuit of Pancho Villa.

His wife claimed that he got up in the morning cursing, cursed in every sentence all day, and went to bed without repeating himself.

I can testify that his language was colorful, profane, and in many respects novel to me.

On the wall in his study he had a framed official letter of reprimand from the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, issued for "language employed while admiring a lady's hat, in the presence of the wife of a United States Senator."

Sorry for my disgraceful performance. I am discovering that with advanced age one
can go a little crazy. And that Shiraz isn't helping.

I was surprised that WTF would be considered outré as I got a PM from a member here telling me to fvck[sic] off.

There may indeed be players here that could display Eugen Drabynka's control on
Sor's Study 6 op.6. But I doubt it.

As for ancestors, my grandmother's grandfather fought at the Alamo. On the winning side. All we know of him is he died in Vera Cruz of vomito.

Peace.

I bet he wouldn't be as proud if he had received 100 medals.[:D]

You always have a cool story to tell Richard. I can't get enough of those.

Just keep it cool with the "Flamenco sucks" comments and no one will get pissed off.

I'm glad to see some good sense from you. Peace.
