Grisha, I went for some lessons a couple of years ago to a Flamenco guitarist called Rafael, who was just in his 30's and had just produced a great album that really got to me. We chatted and played away and I had to admit that his playing was great, but wasn't startling like his album. He said "This is me just playing at home, but when I do a concert I shift up into a different gear". I'm sure you know that feeling being such a fantastic player yourself! So obviously this "moving up a gear" has got nothing to do with technique...you need that to begin with...but more of a frame of mind on the night. By the way I read a couple of things on this thread on Paco Peña, and all I can say is that at every concert I've seen him in, he's always sounded exactly like on his albums. He can play soft and astonishingly hard! A lot of years ago when he was in his mid-twenties, he had just acquired the Gerundino. He let me hear it in his hotel room.....it sounded like it was plugged into a 100W amplifier. He wouldn't let me touch it. He was totally in love with the guitar and in fact offered to sell me his Arcangel Fernandez for about $300 since he thought the guitar I had was crap and I think he felt sorry for me. Sadly I didn't have the dough at the time! So how's that for an all-time bummer! [:D] He played a quiet Malagueñas on it for me too, complete with that really controlled tremelo of his. I left very impressed! Believe me everyone ...Paco Peña is good! cheers Ron
