Romas (roms) and romanians is not the same. The romas live in Romania but not only. They also live in Bulgaria or in the Balkans (i think).

Gitanos live in Spain, Portugal, France...and not only in Andalucia.

Calling the Romas people Romanians is a mistake. Is like calling a Gitano an Andaluce.

In Andalucia you run into A gypsy family that will tell you the other Gypsy family down the street doesn't know anything about flamenco. Then you run into "It's in the blood" Culural ? Racial?
"We're all from Africa" levels the hate out .

Haven't there been any interbreeding between gypsies and non-gypsies? When some say Tomatito is a gypsy, does it mean he is 100% gypsy? Moraito 100% gypsy?

the question is... who cares?

Yes it seems a very widespread perception in this community. Especially regarding the cante abilities.

Confuses race (supposedly genetic) with culture (constructed by man).

It is interesting to note the number of ethno-historians and ethno-musicologists on this forum who perceive a difference between "Roma" and "Gitano," both of which refer to the same people, Gypsies. Gitano literally means Gypsy in Spanish, while Roma is the more universally used term among anthropologists, referring to all of them, whether in Andalucia, Bulgaria, Romania, or Chile, where I encountered some near Valparaiso. They all have their roots in India, although Westerners first assumed they originated in Egypt (thus "Gypsy").

This thread has over-analyzed the subject (and not always accurately) to the point where it would suck the joy out of any attempt to appreciate and enjoy cante. If you enjoy cante, then enjoy! if not, then don't. No need to write a dissertation on the subject.

Cheers,

Bill

You and me don't care but some people use this kind of bs to spread myth.

Non-gypsy can't sing as well as a gypsy.
Non-Spaniards can never be as good as Spaniards.
Flamenco can't be written down. If you ask how come, then they say because it's malo [:D] and surprise: those who say that can't read and write music themselves.
Live together with some gitanos to sound authentic.
Paco invented rasgeo, alzapua, cejilla and everything else under the sun.
....

Who are these people who keep spreading this BS, we should ban them [:D]

I was telling Harold about this thread and he summed it up beautifully saying anyone can learn music, anyone can learn great technique, but flamenco is so much more than that, and it dont mean a thing if you aint got that swing [;)]
