Domenic excellent man congratulations ! let me know wich one it is so i look for it

Yeah man look into this port thing!! its absoluteley worth it..guitar sounds excellent man..it is exactly how i feel atm

Kubase
I got what Anders said...2 pages back..2.8mm or something..

and make sure u put it where mine is ...not right next to the ear so that you dont lose any of the effect of the glope...and the sound comes out evently like a stereo effect from moth your soundhole and port..

i havent tried it any other way so i dint know how good or how different is but i am really happy with this setup...u still hear everything u heard before but this ads like a nice litlle stereo effect....instead of hearing just the port

BTW i tried looking back to tell you the exact diameter but Anders deleted all his posts here...just pm him and ask him..he will tell you

Kubase -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 23 2009 5:55:19)

No problem Florian, I have the info now - 28mm.

Florian -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 23 2009 6:01:55)

oh yeah lol thats what i meant 28 [&o]

hey make sure you post and let me know how it feels when u get it, i am excited for you

Kubase -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 23 2009 6:44:11)

Well I will of course, but I think it will be a different experience to yours. I have my Anders blanca (see avatar) and a Conde factory negra which to be honest is not a very good guitar. It's the Conde I'll be opening up, mainly out of curiosity. Who knows, it may make it a nice guitar to play, which would be great!

it will be a good experiment ...i am pretty sure whatever it was before it will be a few nudges better after

GuitarVlog -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 23 2009 9:59:28)

I forgot that Grisha has a soundport on his guitar too.

Florian -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 23 2009 21:50:00)

yeah great stuff

TANúñez -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 27 2009 16:25:19)

About to install the soundport on a negra before the box is closed up. Hopefully I don't screw it up.

at_leo_87 -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 27 2009 19:03:22)

hey florian,

after the soundport was cut out, did your luthier friend have to refinish that area? i have lacquer on my guitar (i think). i wonder if the freshly exposed edges will have to be protected somehow.

Kenny Hill has photos of drilling soundports into his prototype Signature guitar on pages 53-55 of this PDF:

he put something on the edges...not sure what but he assured me that the guitar will brake anywhere else first before it will ever brake there

so u did it ?????

how do you find it man ?

not yet! hopefully i can bring the guitar to him sometime this week.

im replacing the saddle and golpeador myself. then he's going to shave the bridge down, convert it to a 12 hole, and finally add the sound port.

my guitar is getting pimped out! im damn excited!

XXX -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 28 2009 7:12:12)

Next week Wednsday it will be finished hopefully. So excited! [:)]
how did you guys choose the right place for the hole??

depends where u want the sound coming out...i took anders word for it imagined hed done some experimenting...so i didnt place it right under the ear a litlle to the side...so i get sound from all equally...my port, the soundhole, etc..

its up to you were u want the sound

Patrick -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 28 2009 10:59:22)

I can’t stand this anymore! You guys really are quite clueless about this port thing, but I can understand, as you guys just don't know anything, but I on the other hand. You see, you can't just blindly drill a hole in the side of your guitar and expect it to be anything close to perfect.

What you guys don't understand is you need to "tune" your ports. I have no intention of repeating myself, so read closely. I have never revealed my secret port tuning methods before, but you people are so ignorant you won't use (or remember) them anyway, but that's another story.

OK here goes. The secret to proper port tuning is "Salt", but not just any salt. You must obtain salt from the Satan Sea, obtained only at midnight of the infernal equinox on leap years only. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. Any other salt will not work. Once this valuable ingredient is obtained, it must be stored in a hermetically sealed mason jar.

The tuning method involves placing a small amount of salt on your index finger tip and very carefully rubbing the exposed edge of the port.

Now of course it is not that simple. It has taken me well over fifty years to master my special port tuning methods, but you have an opportunity of a lifetime. I am putting together a one week intensive “Port Tuning Workshop” to be held in a very remote, secret location, to be revealed only after sending your deposit. I will only accept five pre screened individuals that I feel are worthy. You must send 500 US dollars (non refundable if you are refused) along with a current curriculum vita. All accepted applicants will be placed in a lottery for the coveted five spots. Total cost of the workshop is $5,000 US, plus room and board and transportation.

I humbly wait your reply.

Well that sounds a fair enough deal to me Pat.
Sometimes there's just no helping folk though...

cheers,

Ron

It's good that I can provide fodder for some of these jokesters on the list; otherwise it would be a dull day in Denmark, to say the least :-)

Hey Pat, try and come up with something original, why don't ya?

My "fodder" past on two yeas ago, but we do have good memories of him.

GuitarVlog -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 28 2009 14:03:21)

Pat, you forgot to mention that ports only go on the left side of the guitar.

If you drill one one the right, it's called starboard.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 28 2009 14:03:55)

I played a guitar with ports the other day...it was a Kenny Hill classical with 2 ports, one on the bass and one on the treble.

It was a very unscientific experiment ( the only had 5 strings on it and was somewhat out of tune) but I was not impressed with it at all.

I did Jason's experiment of playing a constant arpegio with my right hand and covering and uncovering the soundport...maybe it was because there were 2 ports but the difference was really negligable and I didn't hear any improvement in sound.

I don't want to bias anybody... but just to put my experience out there.

Oh, I have that covered in the Workshop. We spend the first 2 1/2 days on "Port" ports and the other 2 1/2 on "Starboard" ports. You know...any old port in the storm! [8D]

thats fair enough man..i cant comment on that cause i dont know what that guitar was like or how the ports were...and perhaps if you had heard that same guitar without the port you might have noticed a difference...for all you know it might have been a poorer guitar them the one u are playing atm to begin with

u can only compare the effectiveness of a port against the same guitar imo or a guitar u did use before the port was installed..

a port dosent do magic sound on guitaars..it works with what was there allready and makes it better (just makes the sound travel better around your ear...therefore u feel better)...but if what was there allready to begin with was really poor..u might not notice the difference expecially if you dont know what that guitar was like without the port and yourself play a better guitar daily

I know that's the hard part...how do you know if it will be worth it?
Either way though it won't hurt the sound I don't think.

Glad you're enjoying yours and I totally respect the opinions of the fine players who have chosen to use them.

I know [:D] thats exactly right..its not that u dont belive others is just its such a commitment lol..its a hole in your guitar

i tottaly relate to how u feel...lucky for me i am impulsive and irresponible, do things without thinking too much lol for once it worked to my advantage..probably the first and last time [;)]

id love to tell you " fu*k it, just close your eyes and just jump"...but thats my strategy [:D] everyone has to do it in their own time..

GuitarVlog -> RE: soundportparty in my patio (Jul. 29 2009 10:06:47)

Luthier Tim McKnight provided do-it-yourself instructions for cutting a soundport. I copied and reformatted them into my blog:

http://theguitarjournal.blogspot.com/2009/07/soundport-installation-instructions.html

Also noticed that luthier Alan Carruth wrote a white paper on his experiments with soundports.

This is where Ramzi (El Rumbero de Beruit) has us all beat.

How do you hear yourself better when playing onstage etc without the need for expensive monitor equipment or drilling $50 holes in your guitar?

Answer: The Stethoscope.

A non-professionial one is available at under £10 on eBay AND comes complete with a penlight (with batteries) to help find your way onto a darkened stage AND a handy BLUE Tourniquet, in case you should have an accident while performing.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-BLUE-Tourniquet,-Penlight-and-Stethoscope-_W0QQitemZ320329191602QQcmdZViewItem

This is the way to go IMO and makes no impact on the resell value of the guitar.

cheers,

Ron

A true corker of a guitar, GuitarVlog...

Here's a hat to match, just to complete the image!

Bugger the white horses man! [:D]

Ron
