Antonio Rey - Taranta

One of my all time favourite Tarantas

RE: Antonio Rey - Taranta (in reply to Arash

I like it, but I always felt as though they're hearing it differently in the theatre, as though the sound was cut off or the sustain somehow limited in the recording... It's the same thing with all the other competitors on that video. It really bothers me. I found the same thing with some recent Paco de Lucia videos I uploaded, like there is no ambience or reverb on the recording so it sounds unnatural or suffocated and it's not flattering to the player. And it hurts with Antonio's playing in particular in that Tarantas performance because he plays so fast, and then so slow at times, there seems to be no congruity.

Anyway, here are some Antonio Rey videos you'll like to see:

(With Simon Roman, there's a bunch of them, and notice the PdL falseta!)

(With Farruco) See what I mean about the better sound here?

And here's another of Gerardo's protege's, Anton Jimenez, on fire with Chonchi Heredia:

While we are on the subject of Anton... (in reply to Arash

After watching 30 minutes of his performance at Concurso de Cordoba I noticed one occasion where he used three-finger picado and was wondering if anyone knew if this variation of picado was generally performed ami or ima? Seems like ami would be the most natural. I saw a video of Billy Sheehan with Mr. Big and it appeared he was using ami as well (sorry for the HM reference).

There were some Concurso videos posted here where we tried to figure out if he was using three finger. I speculated that he did only on the first string. Anyway, you were there so you probably had a better view. I would say 99.9% that it's AMI.

I wish I had been there. I watched three videos of him on YouTube--each vid was about 10 minutes long. I remember when the vids were first posted and didn't have the time to watch them all until a few weeks later.

I agree with you about him doing this technique ami--that's how it looks to me, too. There's an instructional vid sold on eBay occasionally that mentions three-finger picado. I thought a Foro member might be familiar with it and respond here.

if it's amiamiamai..... all the time, wouldn't you call it a tremolo instead of picado? IMO it has more of a tremolo tech. than picado. I can be wrong off course.

ok, nevermind :-). I just WATCHED the video instead of listening to it in the background. Isn't exactly a tremolo at 1.40.

In tremolo the fingers approach the string from below; in picado they approach from above. There's more power in picado and tremolo has a lighter attack. When it comes to single notes the techniques create two different sounds because of this.

Hi Flo! It's good to see you posting again--of course 12 hours practice per day is more important than 12 hours typing.

The link you wanted to post on three-finger picado didn't make it. Could you try again?

I saved them already. It's good to have this sort of information. I'm not sure what I'll do with it at this point, but it is nice to have it. Thanks!
