Farruquito killed a man

Hi all,

It's in the newspaper today: http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2004/03/28/cultura/1080467165.html

For those who cannot read Spanish:

Farruquito was driving through the Soleá Avenue in Seville and two pedestrian were crossing the street on a "pedestrian pass". Cars are supposed to stop if they see people crossing and if they don't they are expected to slow down a bit anyway. A 35-year-old man was ran over by Farruquito's car. The driver did not stop to help but ran away being followed by one of the witnesses. The injured was brought to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio were he died.

In the beginning the police thought the criminal to be one relative of Farruquito but they believe it was Farruquito himself. Farruquito's lawyer's declaration sounded pretty much as admitting the crime.

I was also told that years ago Antonio de Patrocinio, a singer I liked because of his way of singing the "Aceituneras" palo, also killed a man in a similar way in Cordoba years ago.

I cannot keep respecting or admiring someone after he's commit such a crime. A shadow of falseness clouds now all he had said before.

Ok well for starters in Spain, as in the States, UK etc, you are innocent until proven guilty. So perhaps the title of this post should read Farruquito detained by police. I have little respect for people who flee car accidents. Though none of us know how we would have reacted in the same circumstances, in shock and in fear. The fact that he has come forward and taken the rap is good enough for me. I don't believe this negates the fact that he is an amazing dancer or his views on Flamenco. He could even be covering up for his younger brother.

Your comment on his ethnicity was, as you pointed out, simply racist.

Unbelievable... Gitanos really have a tendency for conflict with authority. Farruquito, what an incredible bailaor... killed a man??

Wouldn't actually be the first time for a gitano... I think it was José Serrano(Dos Gritos de Libertad) who took responsibility for a gang related murder.

Hope all turns out well

He's a dancer. Recently toured Amerrica and UK. He's won acclaim everywhere. Here's an interview he did with Estela

Dave, he's a pretty big deal from what I understand. He was at a festival when I was in Sevilla but I missed it. You know, the bishop of Phoenix recently was sentenced to probation for running over and killing a man at night and then fleeing the scene. He claimed he thought he hit a dog or a rock, although the man he kiled was 6'3" and weighted 235 lbs.

Kate, I deleted that reference and jotego has apologised. I believe it was a poor translation on his part.

Simply a superstar, (sold out in Jerez). He is the kid dancing the Solea in Saura's Flamenco, with his Grandfather, I believe?

Dont know why but that word combo makes me smile. What makes a dancer a superstar, is it the athleticsm? I woulden't have thought there was a lot of room for creativity in such an trad dancing style

A man was killed, maybe by Farruquito (in reply to Kate

Kate,

A judge has not condemned him yet, and he may indeed be innocent. I was just too lazy to get the dictionary and look for the English word for "presunto"... I'm still that lazy.

So well, we can think of it with the romanticism you suggest, and picture him as covering his brother. Not impossible indeed... anyway, is his brother 18? That's the age to drive a car legally in Spain.

It's funny to see how no one seems to care about the killed one. Even I titled my post as "Farruquito killed a man" rather than "A man was killed, maybe by Farruquito".

Finally, he didn't go forward to the police. The lethal accident occured six months ago and a police investigation lead to him today.

There will be more definite information in the coming weeks, I'll keep the forum posted.

And about the -deleted- line on the ethnicity, it was bad articulated, as some other pieces of the post. Sorry.

Jotego

Full Story (in reply to jotego

The full story can be found at:

http://www.diariodesevilla.com/edicion/hoy/hoy438278.htm

That link may not work tomorrow.

The accident happened in Seville, but the car was repaired in Malaga. It was the car reparation what provoked Farruquito's brother's detention.

Apparently they discovered it was Farruquito and not the 15-year-old brother because of some telephone conversations.

Farruquito is (I think) son of el Farruco, one of the most famous dancers ever, and the older man dancing before Farruquito in Sauras ´Flamenco´

People trying to escape from accidents they´ve provoked are poor people, being flamenco or not.

Ah yes...

I was browsing through the avatar section and this one instantly hit the right spot. I think it kinda defines flamenco on some level.

I'll change it though the second I figure out how to use your own avatar(for the sake of being original)

More news today on: http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2004/03/29/cultura/1080540373.html

Farruquito admits that he did it and that he convinced his brother to say it was him (the brother). Farruquito was driving without being a holder of any driving license and with a car that has no insurance.

For a person who can afford a BMW, it shouldn't be that hard to pay the driving license and take a few classes at a driving school.

He is on parole now after depositing 40 000 euro.

RE: A man was killed, maybe by Farru... (in reply to jotego

Apology accepted. I'm just very sensitive to that sort of issue. I think we can now take it as read that he is guilty as charged , as he has confessed all. And I would assume that for all of us, our sympathy lies with the victim and his family, probably it has been made even harder for them knowing that this will continue as headline news due to Farruquito's celebrity.

I am also horrified that he drove without a license and that he tried to get away with it. According to El Pais today, he actually sought advice from a police friend who suggested naming his brother. Sounds a very odd thing to do. Also that the truth came out due to their phone being tapped "for other reasons not connected to the case". Why on earth would their phone be tapped ?

Still, he is going to take the rap and has talked about the relief that it has finally come out as he did not feel he could live with what he had done.

A terrible tragedy, most of all for Benjamin Olalla.

El Zurdo, the playing is coming along OK. I'm using the Paco Pena (can I mention him in here without offending anyone) Toques Flamencos, and there is some cool toques in it.

So, I'm still trying... ;>)

I suppose I feel sorry for everbody involved here, after all it was an accident.
Who knows why he fled the scene. Panic?
I mean he could have been over the alcohol limit or already banned from driving (hence no licence or insurance) and realized he was in deep trouble.
Anyway, a terrible situation for everyone all round and I suppose before I start judging the man, I just thank God I've never been tested by a horrific situation like that myself.
He's certainly going to pay the price now, that's for sure.

You never know how you'll react to something until you actually experience it.

Jotego, how's life in Limerick? We came up with a limerick about a Spanish man who moved to Limerick after several sherries. I can't remember it but that is probably a good thing because it probably had rude words in it.

RE: A man was killed, maybe by Farru... (in reply to El Craic

When I was single and in my 20's I spent a couple of weeks in Tralee, Kerry all expenses paid as the survey ship I was meant to be working on had left and the return date was open due to factors such as weather etc.

On my flight from Belfast to Limerick there were only about 10 passengers, all couples except for myself.
The two extremely attractive young hostesses seemed to home in on me, sitting beside me and chatting and giving me free drinks and being very friendly and informal and on first-name terms.
They asked me if I would like a lift to Limerick from the airport, and perhaps would I like to have a drink with them in their Hotel if I had time.
My imagination started running riot, probably due to a diet of too many "Playboy" magazines and I could physically feel my heart rate increase as the brunette one looked into my eyes and in what seemed a quite unselfconscious way, ran her tongue casually across her upper lip.
As we continued chatting they asked if I could possibly take some Duty Free whisky and cigarettes through for them, since they were not allowed to.
Naturally I agreed, and they came back with some stuff. Quite a lot of stuff, actually.
"Are you sure I'm allowed all this?" I said.
"Oh, don't worry, they're not very strict at Limerick," she said "Anyway, if they do stop you then just say you didn't know. The worst they would do is just take the stuff from you."
When we landed, I came through Customs no problem, and there were the two beauties waiting for me, still in full uniform.
We got into their car and drove a few miles to their Hotel. My anticipation turning to butterflies in the tummy though I tried to maintain my cool.
As we sat having a drink in the bar, two guys came over and joined us.
"Hi Darling," the brunette one said. "This is Ron fron Scotland, he's been an absolute gem and brought some stuff through for us for the party on Saturday."
"Ron, this is my husband Dave, and that's Marie's husband Jack. They'll be able to give you a lift to the Bus Station to get the bus to Tralee".

They're a crafty lot, these Irish lassies!

Still, some good came of it.
The Company I worked for had sent a car to pick me up at the Airport, which of course I had missed, so when I arrived at Fenit (Tralee), the ship had left.
So I had two great weeks in Tralee, all expenses paid!

cheers

Farruquito has just had a press conference in Sevilla, captured live by Spanish TV. He took full responsibility, said he was shocked and panic stricken when he drove away, that he thought about the tragedy night and day and would live with it for the rest of his life. He said that when time had passed and healed wounds, he hoped the family would count on him for anything they wanted.

NEW YORK TIMES - FLAMENCO: FARRUQUITO'S FUTURE The Flamenco dancer Farruquito, 22, has been released on $48,000 bail in Seville, Spain, after his arrest for a hit-and-run accident that killed a 35-year-old pedestrian, the Spanish daily El Mundo said. Originally it was believed that his 15-year-old brother was driving. Minors in Spain are not taken into police custody. Farruquito has already returned to the stage and will be able to perform in October at the Seville flamenco festival, where he has top billing. The judge in the case has revoked his passport, however, a move that will compel him to forgo a scheduled show in Japan. He was charged with negligent homicide, obstructing justice and failure to come to the aid of his victim. He is expected to go to trial next year. DALE FUCHS

Where does a flamenco dancer get $48000 from, I thought they were all poor, and needing dance lessons.

He is not poor, he is successful but I expect they have bail bonds in Spain as well.

Farruquito had dance lessons from his grandfather Farruca from a very early age. He has performed, ie worked and earned money, since he was about 8 years old and comes from a successful family of well known and well paid performing flamenco artists. He recently toured a major and successful show all round America and Europe. If he did not have the money to hand I am sure his manager would have chipped in to get him released so he can fulfill contracts which could have cost more to break than the bail money.

On the other hand our sponsored dance student lives in a marginalised housing estate where he cares for his 80 year old father and earns €160 a month for a 20 hour week looking after children during the day and until now has never had a dance class.

Not, one of those red estates in Granada with speed bumps the size of anti-tank obstacles? Poor bugger.
