To share or not to share!?!?!

Alright, so when is it apporpriate to ask and when is it appropriate to grant a request. I notcied some folks here join the foro and next day asking for sheets.

As some may remember I once started this whole discussion about sharing sheet music becauser I think copyright laws are screwed up. In other words I have no problem sharing my stuff simply because I got it for free myself, and I'll give it all away in a heartbeat; and I have shared a lot. But...

I noticed some people join and the next day or the same day their first post is "Can you send me this sheet or that sheet". So what do you guys think? Should we share with them or not?

If you want my honest opinion:

I think there is no need to start a discussion whether "WE" should share something with a new member or not.

If you dont want to share something with a new member, simply dont. No one forces you or me or anyone else to do so.

And if someone is willing to share something with a new member (even if the first post of a member is a tab request), why not? Let him share.

Ok, we had some fun with all these "lurking" discussions recently and it had some positiv effects (also some negativ)
but lets dont build a front army of old-established members and scaring away new members with every and each subject.

Its the reason a lot of people join in the first place - they need help and resources. Don't be mean. It doesn't happen that often and even if it did, as Arash says - you have a personal choice whether to help or not.

However, you are talking about 2 different subjects:

1) Sharing stuff with new members (like mentioned above)

2) Sharing copyrighted stuff

I am honest, i also have many copyrighted stuff for which i have not paid for and there are also many others like me here or elsewhere. In fact, i think the majority of the people have copyrighted stuff for which they have not paid, but they dont talk about it!!

But i also have many original CDs, DVDs, etc.
In fact, in some cases i first got it for free, liked it and then bought the original CD or DVD, etc.

However, i feel guilty if i am honest, because all those artists live from selling their material and imagine that no one buys anything (everything shared for free). They do this for living. And specially in Flamenco, there is not a big market like Pop, etc.
So too much sharing is really unfair.

Imagine one day you are so good to produce your own CD and then you come to foroflamenco and your material is shared for free. How would you react or feel?

But as i mentioned, i also did it and do it. Dont know why. Maybe because the internet world is so abstract and subtile and so not personal ..

I mean if someone like Ricardo would record a CD , would you download a copy of it?
I wouldnt, because i know him and it would be like betraying somebody you know.

However, this discussion would be interesting (but not the other discussion about new members, etc...)

Romerito's point was kind of what I was getting at. Sometimes seems like first thing the person posts is can I get this or can I get that. And I think it's not very tactful.

I'm not trying to be mean but I think sometimes people think they'll score some free stuff and forget about it.

As far as sharing I agree with Artists relying on money from sales. But it's not the same in every scenario. One of the examples from classical music. Villa Lobos has been dead for 50 years and now we're just paying publishers. I don't think his family if there is any is getting anything.

The other issue is some people here on the foro are from pretty remote places. I saw someone was from Iran, Indonesia etc. The rest of us in affluent countries like US or EU can dash out $50 for a sheet. However this would be pretty difficult if not impossible in other parts of the world. I grew up in Ukraine, and when I lived there I could only dream about getting Faucher's transcriptions, or Vicente Amigo's collection for $60.
I think those guys should get some help. But the problem is that there is sometimes no way to know. Someone will join, no introduction, doesn't say where they are from. All it says is I want some Paco sheet music.

The answer is simple - the artist must perform for money. They should consider CD sharing etc as a way to get people interested in their music and put bums in the seats. Or get supported by a rich benefactor. Is this not how it was largely done in the old days (penny sheet music sales notwithstanding)? The economics of record deals etc is only a phenomena of the 20th century and is struggling to survive in the 21st.

I personally have no guilt!

Now, how this works for a Hollywood Movie is different...

This forum is not really about getting "free ****" i mean members get alot of benefits and free stuff anyway, what the foro is valuable for is that we can get insight stuff from some world class players.. that is more valuble than any falseta u might find... also some beautiful genuine people around the world sharing the same interest as you... i can point you to 100 websites with free ****, but none have what we have..... ME jk.

Personally i dont think its tactfull to see a member sign up and within his firsts posts is requestiong tabs etc.

But that should be left up to the member's discresion, however personally i wouldnt request anything within my first 20 posts at the foro atlist. Expecially when theres allready a tone of stuff shared in the tab thread.

It makes one appear as if all they are interested is in some free tab and couldnt care less about the foro, or the people that provided it, or getting to know the members, etc..
In saying all this, i dont really care, if someone asks me for something and its eazy enough for me to help, i might, i dont care how many posts hes made, however i cant control what my mind is gonna assume.

I think as Flo says, there is a wealth of info on this site without having to ask for tabs as well.
I agree that you should really have a bit of a history on here before asking for tabs anyway.
When I started on here, I did ask about the flamenco scale in one of my early posts. Duende replied to me by PM and sent me a couple of tabs for which I was grateful, but I did'nt ask for tabs as such. He was just being helpful and I appreciated that gesture, as I have been for all the other help I've got from you guys.
I suppose it depends on if the person continues to post on here "after" he gets the tabs he's been looking for. If he does, then you guys would be more inclined to help I think than if he just buggered off never to be seen again.
Anyway - Thats me done my bit now[;) I'm away to lurk on a couple of other sites
