I want to build a small guitar for my son, I have promissed him one when he was old enough and now is the time I think.
I am thinking of a guitar 3/4 in size and I would like to know how I should adapt the plans compared to a normal guitar. Should I use the same bracing patern but only smaller or leave things away, same for thickness of the plates and so on.
I understand its difficult to explain it in detail but what can you say in general? For a child it does not have to be a perfect sounding guitar but for the sake of my education I want it to be the best I can.
A full scale neck would probably be a good idea and if you build the guitar well it will still be useful for him to play as he grows.
My father built a guitar like this for me that I still play, but it was not a classical and has steel strings. I still enjoy it, but use fingerpicks or a flat pick when I play it
How old is your son? My son is 10 and has been playing for four years. To start with I gave him a quite cheap 1/2 size guitar that I "improved" a little, but very soon I found that he was going for the normal guitars in the house because he was attracted to the sound. His small guitar has not been out of the case for three years.
If you give me your adress I can send a nice plan of a lightly smaller guitar than normal size and with 645 mm stringlength. Really nice guitar.
My son is almost 8 years old but when he plays on a normal guitar its a bit of a struggle to reach the strings because the body is to big.
I will scale down some plans and see what happens, I think these smaller guitars have a normal neck wide but I am not sure. If I build a señorita guitar I wont tell him, he would refuse to play it
