Flamenco guitar and "music theory" don't necessarilly have to go together. Most guitar masters don't know anything about "theory", but play like true geniuses. So if it something you want to learn just for the sake of learning, separate and independant from flamenco guitar, then I would say the most important thing to understand is the circle of 5ths and how it relates keys, chords, scales, etc. Basically melodies and harmonies are encompassed by understanding this simple diagram.

Anything "music theory" related can be understood by this diagram. More than memorizing you have to understand the relationships as implied. If you have no clue what this diagram is trying to say, then I say you need to simply take a music theory class or general guitar lessons. But flamenco guitar need not require understanding this stuff at all, and it can actually get in the way of learning.

Maybe eartraining is good. Recognizing intervals and basic chords by ear.
It's good for transcribing stuff.

Hello

I have found these 3 references for studies on flamenco theory.
Has anyone try these books? Can you please post a review?

doublekk2,

As always, Ricardo has given some good advice.

It really depends upon how important it is to you to know theory. It can be helpful in learning what other guitarists are playing, and it can be helpful in constructing new falsetas. But, you will have to spend a lot of time learning how it works, and finding a good music teacher is definitely one of the single most helpful keys.

The book recommended by boral is probably one of the best approaches for a flamenco guitarist - Desde la Guitarra . Armonía del flamenco

I plan to buy it myself.

I also agree with Ricardo's suggestion of getting to know the Circle of Fifths, also sometimes called the Circle of 4ths because you can move in fifths or fourths depending on the direction you want to go.

The most advanced modern guitarists either seem to know something about the theory, or have have spent so much time with the guitar, they have discovered for themselves how this works and how to use it in flamenco.

Again, it takes a lot of time, effort and persistence to learn it, but in the end I think it is worthwhile.

This page looks both easy to read and understand as well as covering most basic elements - ChordWizard

I suggest you download this and see what you can learn from it.

There is a music theory group on google, and if you look for some posts and try to pick up what you can, you might be surprised how much you can learn.

Music Theory Group Google

Good luck,

-Anthony
