Did I ruin my Guitar?

Hey people,

The other day, I was playing my guitar (with really worn out strings), and I "unleashed a fierce picado" on the D string making it break. Since I have some exams coming up, I was too lazy to go and replace the whole set of strings (and I didn't even replace the D string itself). I left my guitar without a D string for about three days (in its case), and just yesterday, I replaced the broken D string with an older (yet acceptable) D string. I was amazed that when I played the D string, it sounded very buzzy and crappy. It was like something had gone wrong with the guitar during those three days (that I left it without a D string). I don't think the problem is in the "semi-old" D string that I put in since it sounded fine when I was using it earlier (I mean, the sound of this D string on my guitar now is just terrible - it buzzes even when I play it open, without any notes fretted). I have been told that it is not "healthy" to remove all the strings and leave the guitar naked after it has been strung for a while (for example to replace the whole set of strings, they should be removed and replaced one by one). So I was thinking, might something have gone wrong with the guitar's neck? Might it have gotten a little bit deformed due to the change in tension (because of the missing D string for three days)? I sure hope not! Please let me know what you think.

Deformation because of string tension would be because of overall neglect not one string missing.

I had a similar problem years ago when I used Savarez strings exclusively. The D string sounded weird, or buzzed, or would break suddenly. I thought my guitar or bridge was messed up until I tried a different brand of strings.

But it was not every Savarez set. It was more a result of the fact I bought "batches" of strings. So I got a bad "batch" on occasion. So try out some different brands, and change all the basses while you are at it.

You say it's not the string itself.
But please check out if the covering of the string is not broken. This causes buzzing too.

My D string severed once, and the power of this actually made a very visible and firm dent on the wood of my old guitar underneath the bridge.

Hi..I've repaired guitars for many years when I owned a mom and pop music store in NY...The first thing you should do is check to see if the nut of the guitar was damaged from the original string breakage. Oftentimes the force of the string rapidly leaving the nut will take some of the material with it either deepening the groove or breaking a portion off. A quick fix would be to put some material under the new (used) string at the nut so as to raise it slightly. If the buzz goes away then you know you probably either need a new nut or need to raise it via material under the string or under the nut. I seriously doubt that you twisted the neck, unless, of course , if the guitar is very cheaply made, however even cheap guitars nowadays rarely have that problem.

No way the guitar's moved or twisted.
Did you remember to take off the old string when you put the new one on

What MusicMaker said, has happened to me. I just ran some sand paper through the notch and it got rid of the buzzing.

Hey Jim,

I might be getting senile with all this stuffing of material into my head (in school), but I guess I can still remember to take out the old string before putting the new one in!!

Cheers mate.

Ramzi,

If buzzing is the only issue, give it a few days to a week before jumping to conclusions. I switched tensions in strings last month and had awful buzzes on most strings for a few days, and they stopped in time.
