Pepe Romero? 
I discovered this guy when I was looking for music by el cantaor Chano Lobato. I'd noticed that Lobato seemed to sound best when accompanied by Romero.

When I look for music by Romero the only Flamenco I can find by him is with Lobato, otherwise it's all more classical; e.g. Asturias, Concierto de Aranjuez...

Anyone got the scoop on this guy?

Pepe Rpmero started off as a flamenco in his early youth but primarily became a classical guitarist. He also formed the the Romeros quartet w/ members of his family. He is a good guitarist w/ a nice sound but not someone that I would try to emulate in flamenco. he gets a very classical sound even when he performs flamenco pieces. He plays ancient falsetas. He plays Albeniz, Granados and Bach very good but this is one of the reasons it is almost impossible to serve 2 masters. His flamenco does not sound flamenco at all. However, he is an accomplished and respected guitarist around the world.

Great classical guitarist. Not great flamenco (too classical). Like an opera singer trying to do cante.

So 'ancient' falsettas are bad?


As I said, my only exposure to him playing flamenco was him accompanying Chano Lobato, and I rather liked his style. It sounded simple and clean and most of all he framed the singer very well instead of competing with or overshadowing him.


I don't even listen to PDL anymore. I know he's the god of Flamenco and all, but it would be stupid of me to use him as a model when I am just starting into all this at my age, I'll be lucky to play some acient falsetas well. So I'm actually finding the more old-fashioned artists more to my liking...

Exitao, have you listened to Diego de Gastor? Really good older stuff. Pepe also had some other flamenco stuff without Chano. Off his songs my father taught me, he has a great guajiras too.

The guajira is composed by his father Celedonio. It´s part of every concert he plays, either program part or as extra after the program.

In his flamenco he often plays falsetas by Sabicas and Niño Ricardo.

Uh, Exitao, I don't know your level, but Pepe is a Paco-like presence in classical. The stuff on that CD is mostly Sabicas (in other words, pretty hard!) Have you checked out Ramon Montoya? He was old school and had many pleasing falsetas. Heck, he wrote most of Juan Martin's book for him!

Well I thought he was pretty good, but he seemed to get poor reviews here. Now someone's saying it's tough stuff he's playing?


I've listened to Montoya, but his stuff doesn't make sense to me... maybe I'm not advanced enough to get it.

Ancient falsetas are great! But have you heard Pepe's cover of a Sabicas bulerias?



Sounds more like a loosely strung buleria with no noticeable compas or flamenco sound/feel.
