I popped over to Sanlúcar two days ago and had lunch with some friends and Raquel (owner of the contratiempo). I very much preferred the climate, food and drink to what I had going on over here in Jerez. I did get to meet my guitar hero for cante (Paco Cepero walking down the street with his wife and little dog), but I am sure bummed I am not going to Gerardo's curso this year.

I've booked hotel but suddenly my mrs says my daughter may have some show on that day... so now I'm in limbo until they work it out.. might end up coming on my own.... which isn't a bad thing.

I very much preferred the climate, food and drink to what I had going on over here in Jerez. I did get to meet my guitar hero for cante (Paco Cepero walking down the street with his wife and little dog), but I am sure bummed I am not going to Gerardo's curso this year.
i have to say it, there is nothing like the fresh seafood and manzanilla in Sanlúcar...how'd the festival de Jerez go? i'd like to to back again, last time i went was in 2018...it was a great line up in el guarida del angel, the villamarta, and got to take to lessons. plus the weather was sunny but not oppressively warm like it is in the summer months.

sher i had to come back to it sometime...trying to get back to regular practice since i finally got settled with a new home and role back here in Limerick after 5 years trying to push the career on in Dublin.
im gonna have to get back to posting in the cante accompaniment thread, and with some of the lighter stuff, por fandangos, alegrias, guajiras and sevillanas...
I've also registered for the course, and booked a single room at Los Helechos (55Eur/night). Finally decided to go with Gerardo's course... Can't wait for this to happen! I'm soooo excited
If the family come I think Im gonna do Gerardo advanced so Im done by 12 and have the whole day if i wanna take them to beach, jerez, sevilla etc...
If they dont, then Ill be looking at late nights in contratiempo and later mornings.... so maybe the later class then...hehe..or antonios class at 1700

I joined a group of dancers that were tight nit and cliquish from my hometown here, and they were already a week into the festival before I got there. I might have missed some better shows the first week but long story short, my opinions are like polar opposite to everybody else regarding cante and dance. It is tricky as I don't want to hurt feelings, and I was stuck with this group like every night for dinner etc. I saw yerai "no hay" and it was as expected, and Juan Diego Mateos, 1973 esteso like mine was exquisite as was the playing. That was the best thing I saw (on my own I have to say, my wife and I separated from the group for that). Glad I went.
I enjoyed Belen Lopez and her caño roto group of singers and guitar players (Jeronimo Maya was second guitar doing his job as accompanist, main guitar was a Jimenez I don't know likely related to all the other guys I assume), the real deal Gitano show for me, camaroneros with the exact right mix of traditional cante for my taste. She danced to Antonio Rey's CD couple tracks to give the musicians a break. The heavy stuff was her Soleá, Taranto, and the singers did a polyphonic martinete/toná that really lines up with that Renaissance stuff I have been looking at, never seen anyone do it before (singing verses missaligned acapella that harmonize with each other). There was some unneeded theatrics but such is a dance show these days.
To me, there was too much stuff going on at the same time in this festival (overlapping shows or in venues too far away to make it in time). If I go again I will make my own plan carefully so I can see what I want on my own.
I did some flamenco shopping and found some excellent books and vinyls, very happy about that.

haha that pic of diego and raquel!! looks like its an old LP from the 60s or something! But maybe the light shining off it...gives it that antique look.
I flew with my Sanchis and backpack. Guitar fit in overhead bin and backpack under the seat. Iberia. On the way back, American Airlines, I had to gate check it as my late check in got me group 8 for main flight and connection. So gate checked it twice (pink tag as normal) they handed me at the gate after landing, I had to insist that it needed to come up to me (show them the pink stub and they bring it up).

I've heard that the Sanlúcar course is really fun. Do you all know when the registration opens? I can't go this year, but I'd love to go in the next few years.

Hey Josh, welcome to the foro! The dates appeared on the curso's website sometime in february, I guess it's opened since then. Thanks Stu and Ricardo, I finally booked an 'extra item seat' for my guitar, which is the most expensive way, but gives my mind peace. It's gonna sit right next to me on the plane, no stress, no waiting, no hassle.
