Pulgar free stroke?

At 2:04. All free strokes? Anyone seen such fluidity and speed?
Thumb movement comes from the wrist. Still so fast.

It’s Alegrias what did you expect? An Alegrias solo from the 1950’s to be a soul searching experience? 😆

In the 1950’s this is cornball solo playing, but overall this guy seems pretty cool 🆒

I know a professional dancer who has a fantastic Alegrias. I once asked her it it was her favorite baile, she said, no it’s way too happy, Siguiriya is my fav. 😂

I once complained to David Serva that I saw a movie with a clip of Sabicas doing that corny up and down the fingerboard rasgueado. I said that’s just showy and goofy. He waved his hand at me, said “everyone’s got to eat man”

Haha! that thing! Urgh. Think that's come up on the foro a few times. I also hate the showpiece multi golpe rumba thing. "Let's impress these idiots by rapping on the guitar furiously with every strum"

It is not that fast. He is copying niño Ricardo. The pulgar is apoyando and ligado mixed, played way too close to the bridge compared to standard.

Talking about red light district and Arthur Rubinstein. Like Che he was a womanizer. Mr. Rubenstein said once:

''It is said of me that when I was young I divided my time impartially among wine, women and song,'' he remarked afterward. ''I deny this categorically. Ninety percent of my interests were women.''

A lot of soloists of that era did the same rasgueado. Juan Serrano likely did, Mariano Cordoba definitely did, Sabicas, Carlos Montoya, and no doubt lots more. Same thing with Saeta with the crossed bass strings, the zambras, Malaguena by E.L.(PdL included), all that stuff. That was what many soloists of that era did. It worked for the gigs they played, which were often not in Spain, and tailored for their audience.

Ridiculing what guys in the 40's 50's, and 60's did seems misguided, or at least unimformed, especially considering most all of us will never play at the level of these old pros.

I mentioned in another thread I was studying some Parilla stuff. No one really plays like him today. He's got this little tango falseta where he's playing picado while doing sycopated bass notes with his thumb. Funky as hell. Took me a few days to get it, and I can't yet do it at tempo with any sense of security. He would definitely be considered old style, but he was a great player.

We need to respect these old guys, and put their playing in context. Old guy out!

Yes.

Thanks Devilhand, for posting Gomez's alegrias. He plays better than I remembered.

I'm being deliberately negative. I got no beef with gomez.
Not my cup of tea, but hey, better than I'll ever be. Respect to the old dudes.✊️ they sold cheap tricks sometimes sure, but I'm sure they worked incredibly hard and I respect that.

Given his diverse career, from touring with Rubinstein’s encouragement to teaching at The Academy of Spanish Arts, how do you think his time in the U.S. Army shaped his approach to music and performance afterward?

Where do you think the safe line is between harnessing the power of machines and letting them get out of human control? Do you believe that a “judgment day” is possible?

I saw a guy on line warning about some AI they developed and when it made some error they told it to "reboot" as in erase itself and start over, and the next day it was "pretending" to be a new AI, but the developers realized later, it lied and never erased the old data.

last year, I don't quite remember if it was you or somebody else. But they made a post mocking AI, saying how it's just a big store of data and it can't do anything new. I always knew the AI thing is gonna advance rapidly.

Many years ago long before gpt came, there was a chess model, Leela chess, that started extremely weak in chess. A year later after playing games with different people, it repeatedly beat Magnus Carlsen, the best chess mind the world has seen.

Point being, AI sees slow unimpressive growth followed by an extremely rapid growth.

of course , because "memorizes" saves all the plays , therefore knows how to beat or to counter the play.

the best is who "memorizes" the plays , hard is to improvise and get out of the box , like fischer did (after hes memorize lol ) , call it human factor. I think that was one of the things that pushed him away of loving the game , the memorization of the plays.

actually, Fischer quit chess early due to his dislike over FIDE politics. Similar to how talented individuals focus more on their work and hate upper management. There's no doubt Fischer was talented.

However, so was Magnus. Even Fischer memorized plays, you don't get to that level without memorizing many positions.

I think the one guy I can think of who improvised the most was Mikhail Tal.

it was a melting pot of reasons , the main wasnt political over Fide, he lost his passion to the game and at time was getting anti social...
as i said he memorized , and a lot... altough he was a master of improvisation , thats why the got bored, everyone memorized and didnt try new things.

Mikail is one of my favs.
