New Van Halen footage?

Stumbled across this tonight and this is supposed to be new unreleased live footage of them from the late 70s. Might be of interest to Ricardo and a few others here. It looks like there's more than one concert posted on the guy's page.

P.S. I haven't watched this yet, lol, so if it sucks....oh well...might just be for the super fans, dunno.

Thanks. If you check I dropped a comment in there days ago about the quick tuning change (a nightmare on floyd bridges usually requiring roadie or simply different guitar). It is interesting because we also need to lock the nut with floating bridge or the miss balance will destroy the entire instrument tuning. It remains mysterious (event occurs at 27:54).

That 5150 guitar I found out has a whole deep rabbit hole of super nerds that build replicas of these things. Probably annoying to serious Luthiers but for god sake I can listen to this guy for hours (I am not even that huge a Van Halen fan but this info I found fascinating):

Nothing annoying, at all. Working on electrics helps put food on my table.

I'll check him out, I enjoy watching videos like this, too. 👍

Those guys are from Fontana California, near where I’m from San Bernardino. Fontana and San Bernardino compete for which is the rancid armpit of California.

No I like electric guitars, I’d like to make myself a few and join a band and thrash out Clash songs, only so much ground you can cover in one life.

FACT - Electric guitar makers are huger nerds than classical makers.

Regarding VH and 5150, if you’re not from California you might know this and I never found out if it’s commonly known about what it means- 5051 is the code that public safety, police, hospitals and mental health professionals use to say that a person needs involuntary introduction into a mental health lockdown psychiatric unit.

When police and paramedics respond to someone having breakdown they call a lockdown facility and say they request to log a citizen into a psych ward by saying we have a 5150 situation and then they take the person to a psychiatric hospital.

Don’t ask me how I know this.

I learned this in 7th grade when Van Halen broadcasted "live without a net" on MTV in 1987. Sammy Hagar explained the meaning to introduce the song...which was the Album title as well, but first the name of the personal recording studio of Edward, and the sticker he put on his best guitar (explained in the three vids several times). Later it was strings amps and everything else VH. Now in the THIRD video I posted he shows there was a fleet of pointed shark fin Kramers painted as copies of his 5150 guitar, however, ONE of these was a favorite that he dubbed "918V", which is a similar CA police code for a violent offender. (1:26:45...recall the end of Hot for Teacher video where Edward is in a straight jacket).

Ironically, on the album version of the song "5150" he used a Gibson Flying V because it had "the oldest strings", and he preferred to record with old strings in the studio. That tune has a noticeable more robust guitar tone than the other tracks IMO.

as a funny aside, that video made a huge impression on me as a 11 or 12 year old drummer (I was watching MTV for drummer inspiration). It is a live concert and I noticed that when Edward changed chords his fingers "zipped" on the strings (very noticeable bright sound of wound bass strings when new and changing positions when letting the finger slide). It was the familiar sound I heard coming from my Father's studio constantly (the brilliant Hauser II responded as such). I associated this with "real" guitar playing, therefore considered Edward a true "master" beyond rock and roll. In fact, since I did not hear that sound typically on MTV, I assumed this guys 5150 Kramer guitar must be of the same high quality as the Hauser II.

tons of these videos are dropping lately (same guy digitizing his bootlegs I guess). This tune at 36:56 I always wanted to see the fingering on:

EDIT, dang. Copyright claim on that show the next day. Might be why half the other video is muted audio.
