So you're just in NYC for one day?

Im planning on staying overnight then leave the next day. I hear the subway is a good place to sleep or Central Park? lol. I’ll probably get a place around the Park not too far from the venue and close to the pizza

One week to go.... what's the plan, if any? Would love to put a few faces to some names!

I arrive in NYC on the 19th, staying near Central Park, leaving on Sat 25th Feb. Planning on checking out some of the other shows/events, though not the Antonio Rey masterclass.

Any good guitar dealers I should check out while in NYC. (Or Ramzi can I come check out your collection :) please? )

Antonio and Al , are releasing some reversals , great stuff...
The trio is now Pacos nephew , Al and Antonio Rey

Theres also a funny clip of Antonio jaming with old Pepe Habichuela in the hotel room , and hes trying to learn some Pepe stuff that he enjoyed earing
very very cool.... how a guy like Antonio still learns and have that will to do that.

In brief summary, the artist that brought the Spirit of Paco to the stage, and surprised me cuz I was never particularly keen on his playing, was Niño Josele. Not sure why but he clearly did his homework and learned some of Paco’s stuff to a good enough degree that his tribute and contributions were heartfelt. Greatly missed were Vicente Amigo and Tomatito, two artitist that had more connection to Paco than many of the others from my perspective. Also Joaquin Grilo, whose feet really knew more about Paco’s falsetas than any other. Where were they? I assume like McLaughlin, they were busy…or perhaps it depends on who knows who.

This was such a great show and I feel fortunate to have been able to see all of these guys in one place, close to home. The program was a nice balance of Paco’s music with some their own personal material thrown in with a good amount of variety.

It’s funny because going in, I was excited to see a lot of these guys I’ve never seen live, like Toni Rey for example. But my favorite performances were from the Paco’s old band. Jorge, Ruven, and Carlos trio did an awesome bulerias together. Ruven was so fun to watch because he was so into it! Carlos ripping Paco falsetas on his bass.

Like Ricardo said, I did not except to enjoy Nino Josele as much as I did! Another highlight was Yerai. For me, the best sound and aire. Jose Merce did a Siguiriyas and that was a highlight for me too

Back to Toni Rey, he did a solo and started off with Tio Sabas. Sounded good, and then after the intro just went into his usual Toni Tarranta, and Ricardo and I are like come on man what happened? Lol

Wow Ramzi! I had no idea you lived in NYC!! I should come and visit.

I'm on the island, I took the LIRR into the city to attend this event. I was on the third level in the back. What a show! Too bad we missed each other.

Staten Island? I saw Victor briefly, but then couldn't find him again. Yeah, come visit, man! I'm going to Tomatito's concert and Alejandro Hurtado's concert (Friday March 1 and Sunday March 3, respectively).

Wow I just saw this thread - a consequence of the fact that for whatever reason I dont come here often. It was nice to bump into you guys, finally saw JasonM, Ramzi and Ricardo in person, also Don Soledad from whom I actually purchased my AF25 Conde and Jose Romero guitars. Although briefly, it was nice to meet you guys.

Indeed that was one hell of a crowd in that concert, I doubt there was ever such an event so tightly packed with star figures. I did see most of these guys before of course, but never them all together. While the program was amazing and most of the numbers went well, but I could not NOT notice some of things that totally looked like train wrecks to me - when artists of such caliber meet, I am pretty sure the show is very much improvised on the spot. They are busy with their own schedules, then they meet and rehearse for 1 hour or so (as we saw in the clip of Rey, Sanchez and Al Di Meola). Thus I could not NOT notice that El Sigala was singing completely out of key for a good part of his number, and reading letras from the sheet. I was also totally dumbfounded with complete mess that Bandera made out of la barrossa, ultimately I think Yerai saved by starting to play his own alegria which had nothing to do with the original - maybe that was the plan (as we saw with Rey) but the few falsetas that Bandera did play were totally out as they sounded to me.

Finally I think Carnegie Hall is the worst venue to hold such performances - I am wondering if anybody really saw anything sitting on the first or second row. I only could see heads of the performers, some were totally blocked by the stage elevation + the speaker monitors that they put on top. That was very disappointing and reminded me why I always hated NYC - everything is done to make money on the crowds, but not for people's enjoyment. I thought I was buying the best possible seats, but they should be sold as "partial view". So ultimately my impression from the concert was very much tainted by my frustration with the view that I got from my seat.

Monitors which they forgot to turn on for much of it, so they only served to block people’s view that sat close. The opening number (Paco’s Maria de La O I think), I could only see and hear Tino’s hi-hat and snare! . Banderas was extremely nervous for all the numbers he contributed, I felt bad for him.

Yeah, I saw Victor standing outside the venue around 6:40 PM or so, on that perpendicular side street (near the artist entrance).

Yeah man - come on over and visit :)

And yes, I agree the event did not seem well-organized / prepared, etc. but there were still some performances which were pretty good. The best part was seeing all the Foro members in person.

Do you think it’s possible they all got paid less for this show and did it partly for the exposure/destination/Paco? Or maybe they were subsidized some too by some art grant. That was my hunch for why Vicente and Tomatito weren’t there. But even if they couldn’t get paid their usual fees I still think they would’ve come - maybe…

Hes giging non stop , spain , us , Portugal (at the same time of the legacy) , and US again next month

I would assume that events like these are planned well in advance, so if I were to have a US tour I would probably do my best to fit it after participation in Paco's NYC homenaje. But it's just me, and probably it's more difficult than I imagine.

When Moraito passed away and a homenaje was organised in Madrid (which btw I attended), Paco was announced but at the end did not participate. The news was that he was sick and had a fewer which prevented him to travel and play (I believe at the time he was in Mallorca), and I remember that people were disappointed and many thought it was disrespectful.

Condolences man! Although she did not disturb me that much, the view sucked way more than she, but my wife did complain about her and certainly did not add any way positive to the overall experience. I can only imagine how bad it was for you, since you sat right beside her.

A layman view that I have is that it is quite an honor to be among such brilliant people who for sure get together in such big crowd once in a lifetime. So I am sure they did it not for the pay ultimately. I would consider this to be a paid vacation, if it was me.

Right, well, the local performances on days after the event are part of the subsidy. In otherwords, in order to get paid they had to show up at the Carnegie the first night and do a free single number (or two). The other full length shows or workshops etc, are the real gig.
