Alejandro Hurtado new album

Alejandro is my favourite flamenco guitarist these days, in many ways I view him as the heir to Paco de Lucía. You may have seen clips of him on YouTube, he's also done an album performing works of Ramón Montoya and Manolo de Huelva called Maestros del Arte Clásico Flamenco. His new solo album is called Tamiz and is available to purchase at El Flamenco Vive and freely on streaming platforms: Spotify

I concur, I really like his trajectory of playing the classics first, or as part of his development as an artist. Very good taste. But which cantaor is he associated with?

Recently he's been accompanying Miguel Poveda (previously accompanied by Jesús Guerrero, before that Chicuelo). I haven't heard them together, but like you say, the trajectory is similar. He respects and loves traditional flamenco as much as modern, and is well versed in classical music too. He has a very bright future, I hope.

Thanks for mentioning this. Those albums are also available in MP3 format on Amazon (US), FWIW.

Oh Nice thanks for Sharing!

Kind of cool to hear an 'old school' inspired zapateado on the album.

There is something about his style that seems classical guitar pedigree roots. IDK why. Maybe lack of cante?

I would like to see a classical guitarist attacking the strings like this:

I don't know how old Alejandro Hurtado is. My fav Generation Z tocaor is Benito Bernal.

The first thing that made him a favourite with me is the way he approaches this classical piece:

But while he obviously has the technical proficiency to play anything he wants, what stands out to me is that he has sensitivity and humility towards the music - he doesn't try to show off or overplay like so many (otherwise good) guitarists these days. Plus he's a good composer which separates great musicians from the rest.

Oh! Look at that he did study classical along with flamenco. I must be psychic gypsy!

But yes, he sounds muy flamenco. Maybe it’s the micro precision in his playing that makes me think classical, idk.

According to his website biog:

"Su maestría como guitarrista acompañante lo ha llevado a actuar junto a los más grandes cantaores de la actualidad. Tal es el caso de Mayte Martin, a quien ha acompañado durante años, siendo además autor de los arreglos para sus espectáculos "Déjá vú" y "Memento", o su reciente incorporación como acompañante de Miguel Poveda. En el caso del baile, destacamos sus actuaciones junto a Inmaculada Salomón, primera bailarina del Ballet Nacional de España."

"His mastery as an accompanist guitarist has led him to perform alongside the greatest contemporary singers. This includes Mayte Martin, whom he accompanied for years and for whose shows "Déjá vú" and "Memento" he also provided arrangements. He has recently joined as an accompanist for Miguel Poveda. In the case of dance, his performances alongside Inmaculada Salomón, the first dancer of the National Ballet of Spain, stand out."

He also accompanies 2 tracks (1 on his own, and 1 with Manolo Franco) on David Pino's album "Mi largo caminar", and 1 track with David Pino on "Puente Genil, Tierra de Cante".

RE: Alejandro Hurtado new album (in reply to Manitas de Lata

I saw Alejandro and David (percussion) a couple of hours ago. The concert was about 75 minutes long. I've been into flamenco for 25 years and have seen a bunch of concerts. Of all of those in my entire life, this absolutely *blew me away* entirely. The guy is so down-to-earth, and so ultra-focused during the performance - razor sharp. You can tell this guy worked ULTRA hard and is both mentally and physically ready. These two were like trained assassins, mercenaries - they knew what to do, they were cool, calm, and collected, and they executed it without hesitation, with all the emotion in the world infused intricately and perfectly. He did not blink throughout the entire 75 minutes. In literally the entire concert, not a single flubbed note - literally not a single one (and I had memorized the whole ****ing repertoire before going). Antonio Rey has the same quality - obviously very well prepared, and throws the entire concert from start to finish without a single blip, but Alejandro is on another level. He's very humble in his virtuosity. He does it also with an "academic" approach. So he's educating, and wowing. He is like what I consider the absolute beast of a combination between a classical guitarist and a flamenco guitarist. He has the heart and soul of flamenco, and he can really dig in when he wants to, but his left and right hand are flawless - not a single squeak, not a single unwanted sound, and he approaches it from an art and science and understanding of history - not just to be flashy. You can tell he understands this culture deeply, and respects it. His dynamic range is infinite. He was ready for this concert - he had it all memorized and just showed up and exploded it all out with all the nuance and confidence possible, without a hiccup, seemingly with *zero* effort. He spanned the gamut of traditional and ultra-old, to very modern, paying respect to the OGs, yet not being shy about showing how he can compose and tell a story. He paid homage to Paco by pulling off the entire Rio de Miel perfectly. He even threw in a classical piece by Tarrega that he said embodied the connection between classical and flamenco guitar. The percussion was very tasteful and only amplified and enhanced the performance. His guitar also sounded like a ****ing piano. I swear, at the start of one number, I thought there was a piano playing in the background.

Bottom line: if he comes to your city, or somewhere within driving or reasonable flying distance, GO, for the love of whatever - gooooooooo!
