atrafana school picado question -mut...

hi guys

I have question in relation to atrafana school playlist . He has video about picado and planting fingers on this list -video 101-06. He shows how to plant fingers and mute string before playing next note. I like this video.

Later on his playlist he has more videos about picado but he never again mutes strings on those videos. I don't know why first he reccomends planting fingers and muting strings and later he doesn't do that . Can anybody explain this to me ?

video 101-06 muting strings

video 101-09 still picado but without muting strings

The planting is a development technique to help attain accuracy and speed through pre-preparation of each note. You don't do that during performance. The same practice technique applies to arpegio and tremolo.

Who said it? One should plant all the time. In early stages of your technique development one should focus on planting. Once planting is ingrained in your brain and fingers, you dont think of it anymore in later stages. This means planting is not an active course of action during performance. Maybe thats what you mean.

@rafapak
One thing they dont tell you about planting is you dont move your fingers in order to plant. Your completely relaxed hand and fingers do it.

Pre-planting, if done as intended, produces a rest between a group of notes (not including open strings ringing out that are not stopped due to a planted finger on an adjacent string). This is called staccato and depending on tempo, much like the concept of swing, there are degrees to which one can actually produce the effect. When going slow, you want a very LONG rest, for example pretending the notes are very detached like hitting quarter notes as a single 16th followed by THREE 16th note rests. When you speed up you simply WON”T be able to achieve that, until eventually you can barely sneak in a rest at all. THE REASON you want to practice slow is to train the fingers to economize motion, as you will instinctively stop using unwanted movements in order to achieve the rested stops. As you speed up the idea is to attempt to detach the notes while maintaining the same minimal stroke motion, until you are going close to Paco speed where the notes are “normal’ 16th, however well prepared and you are not flailing the fingers in a stressful manner…simply trying to put impossible rests between the notes.

Ignore him; he ("devilhand") is a (trollish) beginner who loves to pretend he is knowledgeable, so don't entertain guitar technique advice from him.

That means once you relax your hand fully, your fingers are planted nicely by themselves. In arpegio your relaxed hand must fall back in full plant arpegio position (i on the 3rd string, m on the 2nd and a on the 1st). The same concept for picado.
