I don't know why first he reccomends planting fingers and muting strings and later he doesn't do that . Can anybody explain this to me ? Pre-planting, if done as intended, produces a rest between a group of notes (not including open strings ringing out that are not stopped due to a planted finger on an adjacent string). This is called staccato and depending on tempo, much like the concept of swing, there are degrees to which one can actually produce the effect. When going slow, you want a very LONG rest, for example pretending the notes are very detached like hitting quarter notes as a single 16th followed by THREE 16th note rests. When you speed up you simply WON”T be able to achieve that, until eventually you can barely sneak in a rest at all. THE REASON you want to practice slow is to train the fingers to economize motion, as you will instinctively stop using unwanted movements in order to achieve the rested stops. As you speed up the idea is to attempt to detach the notes while maintaining the same minimal stroke motion, until you are going close to Paco speed where the notes are “normal’ 16th, however well prepared and you are not flailing the fingers in a stressful manner…simply trying to put impossible rests between the notes.
