Flamingo guitarists do ("nouveau flamenco"), the one name that comes to mind is Armik, but there are surely some more like that.

All you’re really asking is who plays nylon stringed guitars with a pick. That it’s not so common might point to the combination not being as effective as others, and the distinction provided by the “flamenco guitar” subset is probably irrelevant. But not to make my answer a total loss, I think Joe Pass and some of the older jazz guys did that (nylon strings, that is). Willie Nelson would be another example, although I’m not 100% sure if he used a pick.

It’s kind of a niche application, though. It’s probably done a lot on recordings where they are looking for that specific sound or for a ‘Spanish’ flavour or the like but it isn’t mainstream with soloists that I’m aware of.

ToddK had the best hybrid technique for it, but he was going for proper flamenco sound. He actually cut a groove into the pick to get a pulgar and nail sound. He moved from a bent wrist like Django style players, this allowed him to make “rest strokes” on down pick movements. He changed his technique to proper finger style around 2006 or so.

Just wow! Thank God I did not see this 20 years ago when I switched exclusively to fingers after 8 years of doing both pick and fingers on electric and acoustic guitars. I would have never got to studying only fingers if I knew how good someone can get with this hybrid thing. Amazing video. Thanks.

The problem with a pick is the music doesn't sound as if another person were playing in the background. Anyways what about playing cascading flamenco arpegio with a pick? Anyone mastered it or anyone seen someone doing it with ease?

This was sent to me by Brune:

He changed out his nylon for steel obviously. But it is a classical guitar none the less.

I don’t really know their music but Rodrigo of Rodrigo y Gabriela uses a pick.

Rycardo Moreno plays with a pick in the first minute of this video (before putting it down to use pulgar). I've never seen him use it when playing flamenco.

He had an Alvarez guitar that sold at auction for like $250,000 that at the time of print of the Guitarreros de Madrid book, was the highest priced Spanish guitar in history. I wonder if it has since been surpassed.
