María del Tango

Hi all,

Here are a couple of videos of the young cantaora, María del Tango.

I first heard about her quite a few years ago from a couple from Cádiz who own a small cafe, called El Tacón Flamenco, in the Centro area of Granada. I think she’s from Cádiz, too, but I’m not sure. My buddy Manuel has often accompanied her and he’s another who first told me she was really good. At any rate, people think very highly of her, and I wanted to post these videos in support of a young up and coming Andalusian artist.

This first video is a Tangos and is one of the Solera Flamenca concierto videos featuring her, accompanied by Jerónimo Maya, amongst others. I like how she doesn’t force things, she’s understated where others may make a show of it. It’s a great video, as are all the other Solera Flamenca videos I’ve seen featuring her.

This next video is also Tangos and was just released a couple of days ago. My friend Manuel is a guest in it and he contacted me yesterday to send me the link. It’s a glimpse into María’s life and it really is well done. The video can be translated through YouTube. Manuel has always spoken highly of María, and from what he’s saying in the video, it’s apparent that his affection for her is genuine and heartfelt. It’s touching, really.

Also featured is a Negra guitar I made for Manuel, I think about eight years ago. I feel honoured to see it in his hands in this video. It may sound weird, but for me, living so far away from there, seeing it on this gives me a sense of connection to something that I really love. Kinda makes it all worthwhile.

I think I saved the best for last.

I also wish María the best and I hope she does well.

Great sounding guitar! Well done. I understand the connection as of what luthiers share. The luthier that made my guitar, gives his guitar unique names to each one of them, and told me that he tries to keep track where in the world each guitar is. He also spoke of this connection you mentioned.

Maria del Tango sounds very good, clear and strong to me. I like her singing. Most of these fine artists nowadays seem humble too, which in my opinion is a quite good thing.

Nice video Rob thanks for posting.
It is nice to see young people singing that good and respect where flamenco came from
Your guitars sounds very good! When I only listened I thought is was a light weight blanca. I was surprised to read it was a negra.
Checked it in the video, and you are right!
Does it sound live just like that?

Congrats Rob! Very cool to hear one of your creations, I know that must be an honor to have it in a real gitano's hands.

Maria de tango, Yes, I first heard her many years ago via youtube suggested video. I like that she's got a bit of her own thing going on. And she sings like she doesn't give a F what you think of her! I'm so bored of these hearing Nina Pastori emulators, but she does her own thing

Now I know why they call her del Tangos lol

Pretty much. It’s got a velvety/chocolate undertone to the notes that I find really attractive. It’s pretty beat up at this point. It’s been used a lot.

Yeah, Manuel is a real character, he reminds me of some of the people in the books. We’ve been pretty close over the years, and have had our ups and downs, but at this point I figure we’ll probably be friends for life. I really like the way he plays siguiriyas.

Nice! Thanx for sharing Rob, I’m always surprised these artest have been around for a few years or more but we only hear about them now? I’ll be looking forward to an album or other longer recording of Her works.

The video linked in Ricardo’s post isn’t my guitar, but no matter, I posted in support of María. That my guitar happened to be in the video with Manuel is secondary, I would have posted about her even if he was playing something else.

But, thanks for the kind words.
