Good flamenco guitar CDs since ~2013...

Hi members!

I hope you are well and enjoying Flamenco :-)

So I was quite active about 10 years ago and now want to catch up with good new CDs (Mp3s?..) since I stopped playing flamenco guitar.. around 2013.. well life is hard.

I missed all flamenco CDs since then. Just got the new one of Antonio Rey and love it., but most stuff I listened to in past was never available on i.e. amazon or anywhere in the net for purchase. Most I got through questionable channels and straight from the artists themselves.

Could you help me out with you knowledge and bombard me with any noteworthy flamenco guitar focussed CD within the last 10 years? With any kind of link if possible?

Please help me..Im in severe need of good flamenco music! :-) I assume this could also be a great resource for many other people (or is such a section available in the foro somewhere?)

Here I make a start. Please share more or were there seriously no noteworthy flamenco guitar CDs within the last 10 years?

Antonio Rey: Sin Fronteras 2020 Sin Fronteras

Vicente Amigo - Memoria de los Sentidos 2017 Memoria de los Sentidos 2017

Dani de Moron - El Sonido de Mi Libertad 2015 El Sonido de Mi Libertad

Rafael Crotes - Asi Lo Siento 2022 Asi lo siento

i didnt see anything by: Tomatito, Nino Josele, Gerardo Nunez, Chicuelo, Anton Jimenez, Jose manuel Leon, Nino de Pura and so many more. Did Flamenco die out? Not much seems going on anymore.

Do you know any other good albums within the last 10 years? (Guitar focused - not cante). I know this here is the best flamenco resource globally. If I cant find here... where should I? Im too far from Spain.. cant go to Sevilla and ask.. Please share if you know any.

I released a Flamenco guitar album in 2020 called 'Irlandalucía' if you are interested.
https://johnwalshguitar.ie/store/

JML is currently working on his second solo album. I'm sure Chicuelo just released a new album too.

Hi John!

Definitely yes interested!! Is there a sample I can listen to?

I was browsing on your website and came across a video. Paco de Lucia was in the title. That's my only limitation.. cannot listen to his music. It brings bad luck.. I know, kind of hard to get around this name when it comes to Flamenco guitar music. But unfortunately thats how it is :-/ His music is cursed..

Ill search Chicuelo. I saw a new buleria of his on youtube.. absolutely baller.... And good to hear about JML! Such a groover! Cant wait.

[EDIT: Una Y carne by Chicuelo 2020 I guess, or Caminos 2022? These sound fantastic!]

Any other albums?

I also think Anton Jimenez produced a second CD but it cant be found anywhere. Does anybody have access and can share or point into the right direction?

2013? Honestly, I have not enjoyed flamenco guitar solo material since then, Tomatito Soy flamenco, and Antonio Rey’s Alma. (If you like Antonio, he is ripping off some bad luck Paco note for note, watch out!!!). I have mostly been going backward to old cante. But there were a couple of impressive players since then such as Pepe Fernandez, Daniel Casares, Yerai Cortez… but I don’t even know if they have solo guitar material out there. The big issue is not about FLAMENCO but the entire music industry changed in a way where producing music without a physical product is just not viable. Better off playing guitar in Solera and letting the video make the rounds. Mercedes Lujan made an album too I think, but I was more into her as the accompanist of cante when I first found her.

Too bad you don’t like Paco as he has had the Trio album, the Mclaughlin duo DVD, and a new live in Montreux (not out yet) come out since his final Copla ablum of 2014 and documentary movie. Honestly that is the guitar stuff that has kept me going since he passed away.

Pepe Fernandez has one solo guitar album called 'Cautivao' released 2021.
Daniel Casares released another solo guitar album called 'Guitarrisimo' in 2020.
Yerai Cortes has only released his pop music project.

I'm not sure what you mean by bad luck re: Paco, but it really feels to me that no one has filled (or even made an attempt to fill) the vacuum caused by Paco's death. Thinking about some of my favorite guitarists -- there's Logos by Gerardo Nunez which isn't really anything new but is an enjoyable duet project with Ulf Wakenius, basically playing over Nunez's old compositions in a more jazz context. Vicente's Memoria de los Sentidos was quite good but nothing groundbreaking. Tomatito's Soy Flamenco fell a bit flat for me compositionally (I much more enjoyed his third duo album with Michel Camilo, Spain Forever, but that's not flamenco).

Chicuelo came out with a number of records, some less flamenco than others (No Hay Dos Sin Tres was one I particularly enjoyed), but just released Caminos which again I don't find particularly innovative. His Una y Carne record from 2019 is pretty good though. I don't know what the hell is going on with Anton Jimenez's stuff, at one point I found like 5 different albums of his that I downloaded that have since been totally taken off of all digital distribution platforms.

Antonio Rey has been far and away my favorite guitarist in the post-Paco world -- I've thoroughly enjoyed each one of his albums, though I will say Flamenco Sin Fronteras was IMO the weakest of his releases so far (but that's not saying anything really because it's still REALLY good). I still think A Traves de Ti is his best, it is so flamenco while very obviously subsuming so many other influences in a really effective way.

I haven't been very impressed with many other post-Paco guitarists, in a musical way...

Forgot to add that I really enjoyed the live DVD Antonio Rey put out, and was highly recommending it (2019?). However, I was a bit put off when I saw him advertise a live stream concert on social media during the pandemic, and found out he was charging concert ticket viewing fee to simply play that DVD!

I also remembered a few other albums after I stepped away from the computer. Pedro Sierra came out with a few records but none of them matched his Nikelao for me. However, Canizares came out with a phenomenal album called El Mito de la Caverna, that one has some really beautiful moments. The tientos especially is really well-composed.

Edit - LMAO @ charging concert ticket prices for a DVD stream. The hustle is real...

There is an awesome video of Canizares playing a lot of the material from the new album. Check it out here:

HI Mike, welcome to the Foro.

I realize you’d prefer to keep it old school, or maybe would prefer to avoid the streaming services, but Apple Music has a very large selection of flamenco music available. The music can be accessed through a monthly subscription, which opens to their entire library to your use or, if you prefer, individual titles can be purchased and downloaded. The download can then be burnt onto a CD or downloaded into a memory stick.

The unfortunate portion of doing this is the lack of album covers or notes and inserts, however. But the selection is really large. To do better would require going to a specialist CD shop in Spain or the like, but even then they won’t have the size of the library available as found through the streaming service. Maybe some obscure stuff, but you’d be amazed how much is available, pretty near everything.

Another positive to the subscription service is if you find a release you like the application will suggest other releases and similar artists and you can spend countless hours discovering new material. Then it remembers what you’ve enjoyed and can play back personalized mixes, which will contain works you’ve previously listened to, along with selections which you have not. From this you can then decide which releases you’d like to purchase, and once satisfied the subscription can always be cancelled after you’ve built your own library of purchased material.

Just a thought. Unless I’m misinterpreting your request. If you’re just looking for names of artists and their recent releases you can search the Foro for the yearly release threads that have been started by members annually, recently by me, but earlier years by others. I’ll look for a link and edit it in.

Here’s the 2020 thread, there’s others…

Dang. I just said it out loud. Had to say it a few times. I even said it to the waitress. Nothing… then the women at the next table pointed at me and giggled. Not sure why. I was shown the door so I couldn’t ask…at least my breakfast was free. I was just about to gnaw down on the bangers when I got tossed, but I managed to offer them to the next table on my way out, well, I said “it appears I’m going, would you like some of my sausage?” which didn’t seem to slow down the process by any measurable amount…

So, I looked it up….now, what kind of parents would name their kid that???

Sorry Mike. Your childhood must have sucked!

But you must be a riot at parties, probably the lampshade...

*edit* Geez…and his first post starts with “Hi members!”. This guy is deep, has layers. You’d think I’d get it, I mean I even looked up his name to be personable in my greeting! Oh man…still, welcome back to the Foro Doit!

Haha. This thread got me searching back about a decade to look at some of the older posts. I don’t know what happened to him, and I never had the pleasure of interacting with him, but some of the stuff Florian used to post was near comedic genius. He was a truly funny guy, and from what I gather, was quite an accomplished guitarist, too.

It would be nice if he dropped in some day and gave us an update. Hope his life is going well.

I’m no expert but this was posted in the ‘women of flamenco’ thread

It’s my new favorite: NOA Dreznor - El Hilo Rojo It’s not exactly puro but it’s not lost in that jazzminco that I can’t stand, ok the last track is but it’s not the worst. No Paco covers, I think???, so your safe ;)

It’s on iTunes which is what I use.

IIRC he married his girlfriend, started a family and got a job at an airport.

You got it Mark! And I hope RobF had a good day anyways;-) Im trying to reach Escribano to reactivate my old account. I dint remember email nor password.. well. Still have my guitars but living in a house with paper walls by now and my wife complained about my fingers... so no guitar playing for me for now. But i still get the feelings running through my body when listening to really good flamenco guitar. Chicuelos Uña y carne is actually a treasure.

So sorry for pissing off so many ppl a decade ago. Im a new person by now. Very mature and serious.

Ill have a look for the annual release threads and the iTunes library. Very very curious and I need new music so bad. Thanks for everyone commenting. Appreciated very much!

Welcome back Dr. Doit!

Glad you liked my new album, Meat y claw. I was thinking I’ve been pretty washed up for the last 15 years.. lol!
Saludos, Chicuelo

PS. Also check out Jesus Guerro. His live stuff is good, which brings up the point, YouTube is where it’s at nowadays for better and worse. Paying the monthly fee for YouTube premium is totally worth it. Not sure how it works over there in Europe
