Which Palo to learn next?

I’m at the start of my Flamenco journey. Over the past year, I have learned a basic Soleares and Seguiriyas. These two resonated with me; I was drawn to them.

For my next Palo, I am thinking about learning Bulerias because it is fundamental, but I’m open to other suggestions if there would be a better Palo for my development / growth.

So a question for the forum: is Bulerias a good choice? Should I consider others?

imo bulerias is a good choice. and tangos, they were the most "fun" and exciting for me.
the easiest is of course rumba (both for players and easy listening for listeners)

Hi TrickyFish,

Great to see you sharing your progress here, I just looked at the other videos.... nicely done!

I would love to see you do some basic Buleria or Tangos compas and maybe a simple pulgar falsetta and post it here. I think that would really develop your timing, groove and flamenco tone. You would get some really useful feedback from people here. We are blessed with so many great resources these days.

Good luck, keep posting.

If you are going to accompany singers, bulerías is not a good choice. Bulerías de Cádiz usually maintains the structure of 12s, but the melodías are mostly from Carnaval, with interesting chord changes.

Bulerías de Jerez make extensive use of compás de 6, which is not a problem if you listen to the palmas. But there is an increasing trend to sing cuplés por bulerías (e.g. Aire, de Mercé) so you need to get the chord changes.

If you are never going to accompany, it doesn´t matter what you learn.

In an interview Javier Molina said Bulerias is the hardest to play on guitar. Sevillanas the easiest. So maybe you can try Sevillanas.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback. I’ve spent some time listening to the different Palos mentioned above.

I’ve decided to focus on Buleria next. Its the one that appeals the most.

I may in parallel also learn Tangos and Rumba. I think I’m at a stage where i could learn more than 1 Palo simultaneously.
