Saludos - veteran guitar player, new...

Hello,

I found these forums after my interest in flamenco re-kindled while working on the Malagueña in one of my classical guitar books. I did some searching and found these forums.

I have a degree in music, and I even briefly dabbled in flamenco years ago when I was in college after meeting a Spanish exchange student who was an enthusiast. Still, I never studied the art seriously.

In fact, I abandoned music as a profession years ago, but I still play as a hobbyist. These days I teach English for graduate writing to international students at a university in Los Angeles, California.

Right now, I'm watching YouTube lessons that are online and working on some exercises. Also, I've ordered the Graf Martinez Method book, after doing some searching on this forum and finding several people recommend it.

I do have a question though. I like the traditional solo flamenco guitar music of Ramón Montoya, Sabicas, Carlos Montoya, Paco Peña, and early Paco de Lucia. However, when I look for contemporary flamenco guitarists, they play flamenco fusion, which I don't care for at all. Are there any new artists playing in the old flamenco style (I think it's sometimes called flamenco puro)?

At any rate, I'm happy to be here, and I look forward to getting to know everyone on the boards.

¡Ciao!

Welcome!

I'll have to pass on your question. I'm just not sure what you have in mind when you say "flamenco fusion". If it's just about the natural evolution of flamenco guitar brought about through the innovations of successive players (including the ones you cited), then it's not easy to say what exactly will suit the tastes of another person, and what will be outside of their comfort zone.

Welcome to the Foro.

Your taste in traditional, solo flamenco guitar matches mine. Sometimes we on the Foro debate what is meant by "traditional" vs. "modern," but I think I know what you mean by "traditional." My favorite has always been Sabicas.

I don't think there are any current guitarists who fit the definition of "traditional" today except for Paco Pena, who as far as I know is still on the concert circuit. I have seen Paco Pena perform twice, and he is the most traditional flamenco guitarist running the circuit in my opinion.

Keep your old vinyl records and CDs because flamenco, like most music, continues to evolve.

Bill

Pepe Habichuela is not new but he's worth a listen. He's my favourite.

That's odd. I set the forum to notify me of replies, but I didn't get any notifications. Just checked it today, manually, and saw all of these posts.

I've been listening to Paco Peña a lot on Spotify, and I agree. He is fantastic.
