unexpected visit at Vintage guitar world

Hi all,

Do not where to post it and as in my inner circle of real life friends, nobody cares about playing an instrument, you just have to sit through this :-)

I had an amazing experience at www.vintage-guitar-world.com

I was in the area and decided to have a look. Turns out it is not really a shop but predominantly an internet shop. So we rang at the doorbell of this house in the center of town and an elderly gentlemen wearily opened the door. They only do internet and on appointment so I could come back in 2 hours as he had a customer now.

2 hours later, it turned out the elderly gentlemen was the retired father of the shop owner who was on a 8 weeks trip to india. He did not know anything on guitars just opened the door and did the logistics. It also turned out by an incredible twist of fate, he new my father from their past business live.

After he saw I could tune a guitar and actually could play some tunes, he suggested "why do you not come back tonight to hang around and play what you like"

So when I came back that evening, he set me up with a case of beer and asked me to start with a 1898 Jose Ramirez that just had come back from the luthier from fixing and they wanted to see if it could hold up the pressure. An awesome experience and an ever so sweet tone. After that we did Conde Hermanos (2002, 2012, 1976), Ricarde Sanches (1982), jesus de Jimenez (2014), Bernabe (2012), Juan fernandez Ultra (2019), Juan Ostrich (1976), Francisco Barba (1981), Jose Ramirez (1928), Manuel Romero (2005), Pedro Maldonado (1978), Francisco Barba (1981), Geronimo Perez (2012)etc. etc.

An amazing opporrtunity. For me the Hermanos Conde from 1976 was the real stand out of the evening.

It sounds like a great great experience! Out of curiosity, what would be your top 5 of the guitars you played?

At €7,650 it is over priced. This is a guitar I have previously owned. It is a good guitar but it has a replaced fretboard, refinished top, and several major repairs. For example I sold it a few years ago for £2300, which was about what I had paid for it from a Spanish dealer.

How cool that you have owned that. It had such lovely high tones. And for 2.300,- i definably would have been tempted. :-) I guess that I could make them an offer at that level :-) However, finally arriving at home last weekend, I came to realize that I am perfectly happy with my Yuolong Guo.

The guitar indeed had some repairs done. But it seemed a while ago already. I somehow assumed that that would be normal for a guitar that age.

I see what you say. Also this 1898 Jose Ramirez was in a bad shape. But I assumed this is what you could expect from a 100 year old instrument. And it was such a lovely sound very intense. I looked that up on the web later and have to say that these pictures are a bit misleading as in real live, this guitar is really small and thin bodied. In size more like a 3/4.

However, completely biased by the lovely experience I had, I personaly am going to attribute the "misleading" for the time being to inexperience on their side :-)

And finally (but now I realize I start to sound like a promotor for their cause, which I am not) the guy told me that 100% satisfaction online is very important for them. So they will take back any guitar they send out.

I really liked the Conde from 1976 (sweet high tones) but not so much the others from Conde.

For the price, I did think that the ultra 2019 was nice. However, it seemed to me that the guitar was not completely finished by the builder. In my opinion it lacked propper lacquer. and feeled rough.

The Geronimo Perez 2012 was really " wow" wen I opened the case. It looks beautiful. However the guitar was heavy and needed quite some force to get sound which lead to high level of snare rattle. I assume some high tension strings would benefit here.

The Pedro Maldonado 1978 I liked as well. I though this was a decent guitar

Paulino Bernabe 2012 had a killer top. I wrote in my notes that it had a thin high tones and a theatrical sound.

The Jesus de Jiminez 2014 I found to much sounding like a classical guitar.

For me, most of them sounded fine and I realized, that for me the sound and playability is a personal thing. As an amateur artist, a guitar speak to me or not. If that makes sense :-)

Seems the guitar has been low balled, and yes 7,650 is too high. No surprise the guitar is a stand out sound and feel wise...these instruments should be 5,000, as they have been since late 1990’s....cracks or no cracks.

The price of vintage flamenco guitars has gone up in the past 20 years (though not as much as vintage electric guitars). Your 73 Sobrinos, which looks to be in good condition is worth more than $5000.

The going rate in Europe for a 70s cypress Conde in good condition these days is around $8000-$9000. With a few repaired cracks/refinished $6000-$7000. Heavily altered like this 76 (remember I know this guitar personally) $3000-$3500. I probably could have sold it for more but not with integrity.

well, al these answers take the magic a bit of the experience for me but it does not hurt to sometimes get placed back into reality :-)

Well, you met someone who treated you with kindness and respect and let you play a lot of nice guitars. The magic was real and you have every right to cherish the moment. It’s yours to keep and thanks for sharing it. I like stories like this.
