Two new Cante CD's Potito y Merce ou...

Got up at 7am this morning on the morning commute to work, plugged in the bluetooth in car and turned on deezer on my mobile phone.

Listened to 'De Verdad' by Jose Merce and Tomatito. First impressions, a well crafted album mixing some very traditional accompaniment with some very catchy and memorable melodies. A few new turns on material Tomate has done of the guitar before, the seguiriyas , taranta and Solea por Buleria stuck out for me the most. the rumba jerez is very catchy and some very sentimental lyrics.

Potito, 'Mi Reencuentro', produced by Vicente Amigo in collaboration, also another fab album from the first impression, the alegrias 'triana' stuck out for me as well as the bulerias 'mi camaron' and the Solea...Vicente's accompaniment was sublime..very tasteful stuff going on. the track fuente del amor is proably the catchiest track of the album..very nice lyrics. lot of ideas re vicents toque for the buleria coming from his last solo album.

all in all, two very nice cd's stick em on via spotify or deezer.

Thanks Henry! Listened briefly to the Merce/Tomatito and it's good, but I really really liked the Potito/Amigo - fantastic!

Wow, two major releases on the same day by four major artists!

I just listened to both and agree with Fred. The Mercé/Tomatito album is a solid release and does not disappoint but I’ve been waiting for a new Potito release for some time and this one truly delivers the goods. It’s excellent.

I didn’t think Potato would work with a payo like Vicente ;)

Only had time to listen to the first song on Potitos, Mi Camarón, LOVE IT! Sounds to me like Vicente is doing a little more the Diego del Morao thing with the accompaniment and i really like it. It’s more syncopated than his accompaniment has been in the past. Been waiting for a new Potito, can’t wait to hear the rest!
EDIT:Flaked on my plans, listened to the whole thing, great album, love the solea, "solea" lol. hate the "single" though "Fuente del Amor" but I suppose they gotta sell it to the masses somehow....Merce up next but people coming over hope I can squeeze some songs in...

I had a listen to both all the way through. Nothing to get super excited about - for me anyway. Womp womp LoL. I think Vicente and Tomatito carry the weight on both of the albums. Think I prefer the Potito.

Any of the Merce tracks better than 'Jerez' which I listened to a few weeks ago? If that was the strong song to launch the album, it doesn't give me much hope for the rest of it.

Womp womp LoL.

Listenning to Merce/Tomatito right now. I guess "womp womp" is a reference to their percussion tracks which (along with the backing singers) have me doing this ( ) quite often. The sections without percussion tracks are the best bits.

Just finished the Potito one. Sounds like Vicente wasn’t in the mood to create new music this time.

The Merce album has a lot of backup singing. A lot of it is kinda Latin popish.

Potito album is growing on me a bit. The recording quality is pretty good. But nothing new music wise, just rehashed ideas. Potito sings the Letras that Vicente would sing during live shows in the second Bulerias track in c#.

Yeah, gotta say, the Merce Tomatito album is likely never going to be played again. The Potito Amigo album has some good stuff. Nothing revolutionary but for the most part it’s good, solid flamenco. I do feel like Vicente is accompanying with a bit more funk than he used to.

Wow, tough crowd, lol.

I think people who like what José Mercé typically does will also enjoy this release, it doesn’t really deviate from his usual style. He generally mixes it up a bit...probably aiming at multiple markets, lol. I’ve listened to it a couple more times and I like it more now than I did on the first listen. But I tend to enjoy his stuff so it’s no surprise to me that I also like this.

I listened to the Merce/Tomatito album all the way through today and I just couldn't connect with it. I like Merce - I have two of his discs with Moraito and the one he recorded with Vicente. Almost seems a bit more subdued on this album. I really dig the Potito/Vicente disc. Great energy, even if there's not much new musically. And Len, I actually love the Fuente del Amor rumba....I'm a sucker for a cheezy rumba. My gosh, you need to check out the video on youtube...lol. All the sterotypical schtick - playing by the ocean, galloping horses, unrequieted love, a big giant moon at the very end. But I do really thing the song is fun and gets my foot a tappin'. Ole!

Haha . And at the end of the video you discover that they are not in Spain but some other solar system with giant moon planets. I wish there were some shots of Vicente playing in the ocean though . Actually I kinda like this rumba too. Better than the Last one they did together. Is rumba like country music where they always sing about love?

Always.
Looks like Flamenco is dead and the great cantaores are but a distant dream from the past....where’s morante?
