Cretan lyra

Hi Guys,

one of my music teacher friends as asked me if I could build him a Cretan lyra of course I said yes but and now struggling to find plans or details to construct it. Just wondering if any of you out there (maybe Anders as you seem to be a fiddle expert :) have any knowledge or resources to help me in this request?

I like a challenge Stephen and the quality would be poor no doubt also this guy is a great musician and as a large collection of world and restoration instruments so I'll try to do my best.

I was kidding, jeez.

I've made stuff like this before. Basically you're going to make a large wooden spoon and put a top on it.

Find a solid piece of wood you can carve, but not too soft. Something like cherry, plum or Apple wood. Some wood that is very old and dry. Or buy thick boards of such a wood you can glue up into a big blank.

Look online for blogs about building rebec and keminche. And also medieval vielle made from one piece blank.

All those instruments share a basic architecture concept.

Yes Google search 'build rebec' and also search Arabic rabab. All that stuff is related. You should be able to find others building the exact iteration you want to make.

I read a blog similar to that one in 1998 about rebec building. Nerd world, it never changes. Probably a healthy change from guitar making.

There's probably a forum online for people into building that stuff.

Or buy the $50 one and use it as a model for what it should look like, then build one better. Lots of cheap instruments look like good instruments....

I was in Archanes in Crete a few years ago and the sheer number of varieties of instrument on the lyre / mandolin spectrum in such a small area was quite surreal. They have alto/tenor etc varieties of sub-variations of these things. Sounded good listening to it at 1 am on a Sunday morning from a nearby hillside.

You could try this if you are still looking. I bought this a while back (I think you can get it cheaper). The plans are basic but if you have any insight about making you should be able to make your own version. There is a plan for a lyre and I'm sure it will work fine. I fancy a go at the gothic harp (time available that is) after seeing Anders harp.
