Un dicho no mas, gotcha, makes sense.
I would never say Vicente can't do something. I'm sure he could do anything, he's a virtuoso. Just saying big and aggressive isn't his trademark. Silky smooth is his trademark and he's amazing at it.

it's a figure of speech not to be taken literally
albeit, i would say his playing can be explosive, like his rageo morote which can be super duper fast, steady and loud (not unlike Antonio Rey)

i'm curious, can you please point me to an example of his guitar choking you speak of?
i bought a guitar last spring (classical, not flamenco) and it would choke with the high tension strings i've used for years (Hannabach 815) and i did not like that at all. it sounds 100x better with low tension strings (Aranjuez Suave 800, which i've never used before). Also, the action on this guitar is a bit higher than normal for classical guitars, I asked the luthier to do that

yeah, I love that rattle too. so i guess he meant choking the vibration (?). that's one thing that really attracts me to flamenco that you don't hear in other genres with guitar, very percussive guitar playing

I think of it as a growl which happens when he plays hard rhythm. He goes from super smooth and all sweet tone to badass heavy compas with that GROWL at will. He's a tremendous artist IMO.

Pretty sure it's a combination of factors action being one of them that makes the difference between a guitar growling and a guitar just sounding buzzy.

While I definitely enjoy his early stuff more I think he's a true artist. Just like paco and gerardo etc he didnt just churn out flamenco album after flamenco album he explored other music and instruments and sounds. he's changing and expressing himself in different ways all the time. as he grows so does his art, this is the true measure of a great musician. reinvention. growth. reaching new people all the time.
anodyne?!?! Jesus christ guy! listen to De mi Corazon al Aire and remember that was recorded in 1991 when he was 24!!!

His zapateado 'Vivencias Imaginadas': I mean, just anodyne and boring. I fall asleep listening to such derivative, lazy, pseudo twangy clap trap.
I hope he doesn't write such dull music ever again.

------- Seriously though: I have not even listened to anything he has done since 'Momento en Sonido' (with its dull Farrucca *yawn*), because I am in too much awe of his abilities.
That said, he owes much to Sanlucar, PdL and the other luminaries before (but who here does not?).
I look forward to reading the reviews here, because it is too painful hearing such musical excellence, always a kick up the arse to practice harder!

Listen to this Bulerias, lots of hard rasgueos might give you a idea.

Hey guys, I think Vicente Amigo would sound a lot better when he would play with a pick. There are no doubts that artists like Al di Meola get a richer tone out of their guitars than V. Amigo. His songs are also quite boring, I mean compare it to Dream Theater tracks e.g.

100% this... Vicente is/was an absolute monstruo, although his latest work is obviously intended to be more popular oriented. Check out his accompaniment of El Pele and solo albums up through the 90s. His guitar playing is unbelievably expressive.

Well obviously this is all %100 accurate but pobres flamencos can't afford picks. That's why The Strokes is more popular than Manolo, they can afford picks. Hilarious.....

You're joking but I kinda have to agree with him.
It's not like we're still playing guitar in caves with no electricity.. how long will it take for flamencos to update their guitars? Squier starter packs are pretty cheap..

We'll see. Just bought a ticket for a performance here in Austin, March 23. He'd better be good: 80 bucks for the ninth row in a big hall, Dell Hall in the Long Center. Place is already nearly sold out.

Vicente in a live setting... Freaking incredible! I enjoyed his concerts even more than Paco and Tomatoe Hopefully he will play material from this up coming new album, I'd be less excited about Tierra. It wasn't worth a 5 hr trip to New York and $250 a ticket!
I love the way he incorporates space in his playing, in compas sections the way he plays with space - rasguado sounds more dramatic.
Regarding some of his less traditional stuff, I agree with Stu- he has put out a lot of good material already so let him try new new things. Although I am always hoping to be blown away by insane an insane bulerias on each new album.
