Buying guitar

i'll be in Spain next June and want to shop for a decent guitar in Cordoba (3000€ budget). i'd like suggestions for shops that i can walk in and have a few choices to try and buy on the spot (don't want to commission).

i want a guitar that sounds like this with flamenco playability:

I probably don't know too much about very good guitars but what I do know is to get a decent Reyes as Vicente or something remotely close is going to cost quite a penny, especially now that Manuel Reyes has passed. its like the prices just doubled.

If you like the way the Eliasson guitar sounds, why not ask him to make one for you?
He's a member here, easy to reach and it'll probably be within your budget.

If you commission, you control every aspect to give you the playability you seek. That is what luthiers do.

I still think he might have a couple of guitars around that he built not on commission. (That's also something that luthiers do.) You can try before you buy.
I understand your view about commissioning a guitar, but in me the feeling is stronger that you won't be able to get a really good value from a shop - the really good ones go directly to those who pay in advance. Or they cost a fortune.
Anyways, I hope you'll find the one you'll fall in love with!

I´m quite sure that Anders has a few guitars around for you to try....
Jeronimo perez in Agodonales makes great guitars also or Peña Vargas in Jerez.
In Cordoba there is the Paco Navarro School, he´s got Conde, His own factory brand and another brand I wont name here... )
If your going to spend that kind of money might be worth to go to Barcelona, the guys from flamencoguitarforsale have many guitars to try, new and secondhand.
But why bother if Anders is closer :)

In Córdoba there are José Rodriguez Peña, Graciliano Pérez, Manuel Reyes Hijo and Hermanos Peña. I didn't visit Graciliano or Reyes but I think they also have guitars that you can try out. Hermanos Peña are little known and since you are willing to buy a guitar on the spot I'm certain you can negotiate the price with them.

I was there this summer and ordered a guitar from José Rodriguez Peña. Last month I went back there to pick it up and I must say I couldn't be more satisfied with the guitar, worth every penny. I recommend you visit his workshop even if only to know him, José is a true gentleman.

@DavRom: Anders is selling that exact guitar that you like in the clip (#122), and it's within your budget - see http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=284999&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=&tmode=&smode=&s=#286138

IMO you should just buy it. Don't wait until June, you could have it right now and be enjoying it for the next six months.

RE: Buying guitar (in reply to DavRom

from the videos i have watched (documentary incl) i know Anders is a consummate luthier. i posted the youtube link above because i love the sound of his #122 guitar

however, i can't know how that guitar will feel in my hands. and i live in the USA so i have no way of participating in the construction process until i can actually play one of his guitars. so it goes for other luthiers in Spain and why i want to try and buy on the spot. also, Anders shop is in Huelva, which is not on our itinerary

RE: Buying guitar (in reply to DavRom

Beginning of june I am in the neighbourhood of Barcelona.
I have an Anders Negra with me by than, so you can try one if you want.

Also it is a mission impossible what you want. A lot of story's on internet from guys from the states with a few 1000 dollars end up with a spoiled holliday and no guitar.

Last thing, the two guitars that you rever to are totally different in sound with totally different playability.
Are you sure you know what you look for?

Sorry for a little grumpyness, but I have made all the mistakes you can make with buying guitars, so see this as a brotherly warning.

Have a nice time in Spain

Man, #122 and #121 are still for sale and Anders has a sale on right now. With that money you save on his sale you can get on a bus or train down to Beas (Huelva) and give it a try. Or hire a car, it is less than 3hrs if you don't get lost. I have his #123 which he made at the same time more or less, the playability and sound are spot on. Just get down there and give it a go. Or if time is an issue for you contact Anders and see if you can meet him somewhere other than Beas.

@Dudnote

i listened to his #123 video and it sounds much like the #122 (not quite as bright). do you have any videos or just audio of you playing it?

RE: Buying guitar (in reply to DavRom

I'm sure they're quite different beasts tone wise because one is blanca & the other negra, so the rosewood should give more sustain and warmer tone. That said, they will both have the "Anders sound" (coming from the soundboard) and his guitars do sound muy muy flamenco. I nearly bought 122, but already had a blanca, so went for 123.

I've a few warts 'n' all videos / recordings on here, some just recorded on iPhone, some with a Zoom multi-track (supposedly better mic). You can check in the falsetta swap shop, the "not too shaky" thread, a thread on Falla's spanish dance (or dance espangole). Also, you can check my entry in the John Walsh solea challenge where I try to bring out the dynamics as best I could. Also, I've a few rough recordings in the winter juerga thread (must get back to that thread soon).

Bear in mind it is super humid in Guadeloupe and a bit punishing for all instruments here. Also there was a lot of discussion not so long ago about how recordings and live in vivo can be completely different.

RE: Buying guitar (in reply to DavRom

what i found especially similar is the spring and growl

your #123 still seems pretty bright for a rosewood guitar. none of the rosewood (spruce as well as cedar top) guitars i've owned come anywhere close to that brightness. but i know more attack equals brighter tone

thx for the links!

In case you missed these

also, if you watch El Guitarrero, all the music on there was played by Anders on his guitars.
