Greetings from Spain (Madrid)

Hello, friends.
My name is David, I'm from Madrid, Spain.
I've just discovered this forum and I find it really amazing. There's a lot of info and people are very cool.
I'm a radio host at a local radio station in Madrid, in wich I host a flamenco show. So, as you can suppose, I'm very enthusiastic about flamenco music and I would like to make some good friends here to share our passion.

DavidRG,

You host a radio show in Madrid featuring flamenco?! You sound like a very welcome and interesting addition to the Foro. One of the more interesting discussions that occasionally pops up is the state of flamenco in Spain, particularly in Andalucia. What is your take on it? Some have expressed the opinion that flamenco is not as popular as it once was even in Andalucia, as it gives way to "world music" and other genres that capture the younger crowd. There probably always will be a niche for it, but do you see it holding its own in Spain? Or is it losing out to other genres?

Bill

Thank you for your warm welcome, I'm glad to be here with all of you

Well, from my point of view, flamenco is "popular" in Spain and "very popular" in Andalucia and other areas, but it's not the most popular music.
That means that there is always a niche for it, as you say, and the niche is much bigger in Andalucia, Extremadura, Madrid and Barcelona.

But to be clear: flamenco is not the number one music in Spain. Pop music sells many more records. I think it's like jazz music in the USA. Musicians are awesome and well considered but pop music artists sell more records.

;)

Greetings David.
Nice to have you here.
And nice to hear that flamenco isn't dying out in Spain
On the contrary, it's my impression, that (at least in Andalucia) it's vast potential for
the flamenco-tourist industry has been discovered, what with "schools" popping up everywhere, and flamencos being much more willing to share their art than say 20 years ago. This seems to have a positive effect on professional productions as well.

edguerin:
You are right, flamenco people are more open nowadays and share their knowledge. Once a guitar player told me that 50 years ago, or 40 years ago, competence was huge and an artist was only hired if he was really different and unique. That created some paranoid state of mind, with funny (and ridiculous) tricks for trying the others not to steal from you.
Today, the video industry and the Internet have changed that in a possitive way.

mark indigo and Leñador: thank you very much. I've been hosting my show since october the 6th, 2015, and it's a weekly show, so I've made only 11 episodes. They are available here: http://www.eltablaoflamenco.com/categoria/programa-de-radio/

TGerman:
Thank you, you nailed it :)

By the way, my show is in Spanish. I'm preparing a new radio show in English, that will be available as a podcast. It will begin in january. If you feel interested, I could give you a heads-up

:)
