I also think that Nunez's is the best because of the exercise section. The ones that Merengue de Cordoba and Moraito did are not bad either because in the former's case they serve as a great introduction to the different palos and cante accompaniment (both of the books), whilst the latter's also has a cante accompaniment section.
The other books are good if you want to learn falsetas and pieces from the particular guitarist who's book it is, and do not really serve as general flamenco instruction.
Paul and DarkElie, what about the Chicuelo DVD do you particularly like? I've heard some people compliment the Nunez DVD because he actually takes some time to explain certain aspects of technique (as opposed to just giving demonstrations of what one's supposed to learn to play). Is that true of the Chicuelo DVD, as well, or are there other strengths that you think are important?
Nope ! Chicuelo plays some of his pieces at the normal speed and then he slows them down so you can learn them along with the tabs you have. I don't remember him explaining any technique. check this it might help :La guitarra flamenca de Chichuelo I like Paco Serrano’s DVD as well and as I remember he explains the techniques by mentioning them and then including them in the piece ( not same as Gerardo )
the reason I like Chicuelo's DVD is because I like his CDs/compositions I played his taranto-tangos-rumba and his tangos and they are so special and interesting and I'm willing to learn the rest. so I guess it is a matter of taste .. if you like pepe's cds go and get his DVD if you like Moraito get his DVD because they usually include some works of their cds in the DVD.
what about the Chicuelo DVD do you particularly like?
It‘s perhaps worth mentioning that that mother-in-law sat down and watched the Chicuelo DVD, fascinated, all the way through with me, including the slow bits; and she knows nothing of Flamenco and cares less.
Moraito's is fantasic, all his best bulerias plus he accompanies the late Terremoto jr por Malagueña, Siguiriya, Tiento/tangos, and buleria with half compas.
And more on lines of cante, Merengue de Cordoba II is all cante accomp...a text book reference for flamenco guitarists IMO. I lent it out and it is gone, but it was so useful to me over the years.
since you asked really like all that i've seen...though sounds like chicuelo's the next order. 1 Gerado for technique, exercise's and musicality.. 2 Paco Serrano for simplicity of ideas and explanation..very playable material. 3 Tomatito and Moraito for groove and power 4 Rafael Requini for complexity and sensitivity 5 Pepe Habicheula for feel
still have a few more to go... Just ordered the Miguel Angel Cortes so awaiting that....think the focus here is on other 'keys' and modulation....let you know...
