RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

My vinyl version of Dos Guitarras Flamencas is actually a later re-issue with a different cover. I havent seen a copy of the original LP anywhere.

Dos Guitarras Flamencas (Aplauso re-issue) 1981 PHILIPS 64 29 807 GT.49

Finally another unlisted CD single with Paco and Camaron at Christmas

Nochebuena gitana con Camaron y Paco de Lucia "La Virgin Maria" (promo CD single) PHILIPS 856 314-2

This is where I have to end my discography research for now- I am doing so for 3 reasons.
1. I am not finding any new material now, just back issues and re-issues of already listed material.
2. I cant actually afford to keep buying any more Paco de Lucia albums or spend more time on this.
3. I have sucessfully turned my dining room into a second hand record shop.

If anyone adds any extra tracks or discs I will update the list as they come up. Thanks everyone for taking part and following this piece of research...and good luck to whoever decides to upload it to the web.

There’s a copy for sale right now on Amazon UK (ASIN=B003YY1A58), for £15.98. You can type the ASIN straight into the search box.

I tried to PM you, but it bounced

What a great advert!

I know I said I had finished this thread but there were a few loose ends that were bugging me and a few more photos to upload..and also a couple of surprise finds. So first, here is the cover to another one of our listed Camaron EPs.
I can add the tracks now.

It has been bugging me for a while that there are 8 El Sevillano EPs with Paco but I could only find one LP. I did a bit more searching and found another earlier 12 track Sevillano LP from 1969 with a different track listing also on the Fontana label.

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

Two more additions now to the Paco de Lucia and Ricardo Modrego colaborations.
I found this re- issue of Dos Guitarras Flamencas en Stereo from 1975 on the Philips Aplauso series.

I also found this very nice French version of 12 Canciones para dos Guitarras.
On the front is a quote by Andres Segovia "Qu'ya til au monde de plus beau que la guitarra? Deux guitares..."
meaning "Is anything is the world more lovely than a the guitar? Two guitars..."
Although Segovia was himself quoting Chopin who said "Nothing is more lovely than the guitar, save perhaps two"

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

However the biggest problem with this discography has been the Fosforito section. Its been a constant source of frustration that there are items on our discography that have been hard to track down and dozens of extra finds that havent been listed. The biggest problem is the quantity of material. The only way that I have been able to sort this out is to track down as many Fosforito recordings as possible and check each one for colaborations with Paco.

So we already have photos of the original 1968 Belter 22.219 and 1969 Belter 22.362 Fosforito/Paco LPs from my collection on pages 4 and 5 of this thread.

Here is the cover in great condition to the 1969 BELTER 22.360 colaboration already on our list.

Next are 2 more later Fosforito compilations.

The first is Libre Quiero Ser, a 12 track compilation from 1974 with 10 of the tracks featuring Paco on Guitar. This is already on our list.
The second is simply called Fosforito and is unlisted from the discography. It is also from 1974 but only features one paco track. The other 11 tracks feature Juan Carmona.

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

The next compilation from 1978 is also called "Libre Quiero Ser" (this is a bit like sorting all all the Paco albums called Entre dos Aguas). This was already on our list. It has a different track list from the other LP with the same name and features 7 Paco tracks.
Fosforito - "Libre Quiero Ser" LP 1978 BELTER 2-27.009

This next compilation is unlisted. Its another of the Mano a Mano series featuring 6 Fosforito tracks.
Mano a Mano - Gabriel Moreno/ Fosforito 1975 PHILIPS (Aplauso) 64 14 669 GT.49

Lastly I found a pretty good version of Seleccion Antologica Volume 1 BELTER 22.587 to complete my 4 disc set.

Next up is something totally different. This another unlisted stray track, this time with pop duo Al Bano and Romina Power. Paco is playing some picado lines over a dub/pop track which has no lyrics in the chorus. Its about as congruous as Mozart on a beach boys album. The only critique I can give is "Why????????"

Anyway you can listen for yourself here. There is another live video where someone is trying to mime the Paco part but its too painful to watch.

Recital de Guitarra is proving very hard to find a copy of the original 1971 recording. I finally tracked down a copy and also have the vinyl 1975 re-issue "Circulo de Lectores" which is also the same photo as the CD

Recital de Guitarra (Edicion Circulo de Lectores) 1975 PHILIPS 63 28 036 54528

Also a photo of the gatefold cover of the Brazilian double compilation LP - A arte de Paco de Lucia 1985 FONTANA which we already listed.

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

However, by far the best find recently was this near mint condition version of the LP Antonio Mairena -Cantes en Londres ye en La Union PASARELA PRD-107 (already listed) Its a Live performance with Manuel Morao (Moraitos uncle) in London in 1954 on one side and with Paco at La Union, February 16, 1974 on the other. The sound was cleaned up and released in 1984.

This is such a rare recording and my hands were literally trembling with excitement when I found it. This sensation immmediatly became dulled by the realization of what a giant Friki - nerd I have become......imagine a grown man getting so thrilled at finding a rare flamenco record!! Anyway, its a prize part of my collection.

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

I tracked down the 1970 Belter LP Fandangos de Huelva from our list. I corrected the index number. Its impossible not to feel happy when you look at the cover
It has two Paco tracks, the first with Niña de la Puebla and the second with Fosforito. This is the only LP that I have found in the entire discography where Paco is credited as BOTH Paco de Algeciras and Paco de Lucia on the same record.

Fandangos de Huelva 1970 BELTER 22.427

The second LP "Los Mejores y su cante" features another Fosforito/Paco track (tangos de Cadiz)

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

So this really is the end of the discography for a while. Im going to research again next year. I think the list is pretty comprehensive now but Im left with some unanswered questions such as
1. We can see that Paco usually made 2 EPs with artists. A single EP was made made Antonio "El Camborio", Carmen Moreno, Rocio Jurado etc. Are there others?
2. We have listed the 12 track Fontana LP of Juan Cantero. Are there any early EPs?
3. How many discs in the series of Mano a Mano, Recuerdos de España, Antologia del Cante, trio de Ases contain Paco tracks?
4. How much unlisted work is out there with Pepe de lucia and Fosforito?
5. Where are the original EPs on Ricardos compilation, Rafael Ortefa, Niño Brenes, Alvaro de la isla etc.
6. How much unlisted Japanese material is out there, posssibly unreleased in Europe?

Hopefully I will be able to hunt down some of the answers in the new year. For now Im going to leave you with an early Xmas gift.
This last addition is an unlisted promo CD of Cositas Buenas. It contains the audio track Cositas Buenas and then a 10 track audio interview with Paco that I havent heard before. The interview is in the form of answers to 10 questions listed inside the sleeve (see photo)
There are 2 video clips as well. The first is the videoclip to Cositas Buenas which you can see here on youtube. The second is a 15 minute video interview that again I have not seen before and cant find anywhere on the net.

These are pretty rare interviews so I have uploaded these files to dropbox for any members here who would like to see and hear them.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4by9r2kvv2d88pw/AAAxYH5QEDYyXMOOvDqudJwia?dl=0

Good luck everyone and hope this thread has been as rewarding for you as it has for me. Descanses en paz Paco.

La Busqueda Documentary box set out this week. La Busqueda comes in a 3 page digipack featuring the documentary DVD. Unlike the DVD in the Conciertos en España 2010 pack, this one also comes with English subtitles. Also included are 2 CDs with 29 tracks all remastered in October 2014 from the discography that really reflect his best work over the decades. These include a couple of live tracks I have not heard before. Best of all is a 28 page colour book full of concert photos, memorabilia and concert tickets.

I have added this work to the discography under Box sets and compilations

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

Here are 2 more unlisted compilation discs to add to the Paco and Niña de la puebla collaborations. The first is another from the "Mano a Mano" series with Nina de la puebla and Teresa Jereño. The bulerias "El Escultor" is again incorrectly credited to Eduardo de la Malena as guitarist. Since this track features on so many compilations I wonder how many of Pacos royalties ended up going to Eduardo
The second LP is a compilation of Fandangos with the tracks "Aunque rio entre la gente" and "Deten tu paso" featuring Niña de la puebla and Paco de Algeciras.

Mano a Mano- Niña de la Puebla / Teresa Jareño 1976 IMPACTO EL-184

RE: Pacos Discography (in reply to Pimientito

I have tracked down a few more discs from the 20 disc Belter anthology of cante.
It would seem that all of them have Paco tracks on them. Volume 1. Saetas contains two tracks with Paco and Fosforito.
Volume 3. El Polo, La Caña also has two Fosforito and Paco tracks.

Antologia Del Cante Vol. 1 Saetas 1971 BELTER 22.901
Antologia Del Cante Vol. 3 El Polo, La Caña 1971 BELTER 22.903

This was another rare find. Its a reissue (undated) of the 1970 recording of El Lebrijano and Paco. Track Listing is identical to the original recording.

Also the cover to the Fosforito EP BELTER 52.361 which we already had listed but with no photo references.
To add to the Fosforito colaborations I found another unlisted compilation LP with 3 more tracks featuring Fosforito and Paco.

I understood it was the "original" version of Entre dos Aguas, improvised in the studio to make an extra track for the LP, but then Paco re-recorded a better version for general release,

Its ironic that Pacos most famous work as far as the general public is concerned was an improvisation thrown together as quick as possible to finish Fuente y Caudal.

I dont know if what you wrote is correct. I heard that the British Version had picado runs that were too long and fast, and this was somehow in bad taste for a commercial release...but which recording came first, I have no idea. However the picado run in the middle of the British version is still to this day the most jaw dropping and awesome piece of guitar playing that I have ever heard.

Finally got my hands on the vinyl of this British album. The version of entre dos aguas stands out to me separate from the original recordings. It sounds quite similar to the live TV versions he performed in the mid 70's, same type of improvisations, same instrumentation...in fact I will have to take a closer look at the vids to see if it is not infact simply the audio from one of those shows. I also notice it sounds in F minor, meaning it is sped up quite a bit. Those picados sound unreal because, THEY ARE unreal.

The TV versions sound in E minor and are the actual speed. Again I will check to see if I can match the audio to a live video.

I want to add that I was disappointed with the new DVD as it has two major flaws....no chapters, it's all one chapter so you can not jump to the malagueña scene etc, and the "menu" window has entre dos aguas playing at like 200 Db too loud!!! It made my entire house shake the first time I saw that when it jumps back to the menu after the movie credits finish.

The CD I think are remasters of original recordings...the only improvement I noticed was the brighter versions of the tracks from "live in America" which have always been too dark for my tastes.

How sure are you that he was tuned to concert pitch?

Not that speeding the whole thing up would surprise me — the purpose of the rerecording is clearly to amaze the natives.

Bass would also have to tune up, rhythm guitars, and the twangy drums heads etc, and of course Capo is not an option as Paco would need the 20th fret . Any way I am about 100% sure. Though I note that some Miles Davis reissues by CBS they admit (in liner notes) that tape reels that ran slow when recording would accidentally play the music back faster on a different machine when doing masters, so they had to go back to correct for the pitch and tempo of some recordings. In other words this thing used to happen often and it was not to impress people with "speed". I know for fact that Friday night in San fran is sped up a hair, and even though it was also CBS (darn tape reel) I have to assume it was deliberate to make the album more bright and impressive.

It sounds like the same group that performed in 1976 TV spot (the one that was made spoof as well by st Sanders), I can tell by the bass lines and the congas and the bongo two finger drum roll....but the performance is not the same. He does the same extended picado line though. The record is (p) 1975 Island records.

This explanantion would make sense. I have often wondered if this isnt true for many other old recordings. Some of the 50s flamenco sounds superhuman fast. Also if your record deck has a belt drive, it will affect the speed of the turntable with time so the deck has to be calibrated. A good deck will have a strobe light that allows your to shift the pitch slightly.

Back to the Discography, I found another unlisted Camaron 7" single that somehow escaped through the net.
