I made a claim; I was told I shouldn't have listened to him and I couldn't claim. For a while they refused to pay but after a real fight from me they finally paid up. I wouldn't ship with UPS again.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with UPS. I now only use Fedex or USPS (I don't have access to DHL or I would use them). I don't know if these shippers are any better than UPS since I haven't had an issue with them but I know that Fedex has always been less expensive and faster than UPS and their warehouses (allegedly) are heated.

I'd be willing to bet the cracks she was referring to was actually the wood grain. She may have unpacked it herself before her husband got home. Once her husband pointed this out she was so embarrassed that she couldn't admit to the mistake, so she just dismissed the whole case by insisting she keep it as-is. Now she knows!

Wiking--this is the understanding that I have pretty much settled on.

And thanks for sharing your story about someone who ripped you off through Paypal. I'm sorry that happened to you. Paypal's service to sellers is too expensive for me--it would cost me around $300 for one guitar sale. I tell people they can send me a check or use Paypal's service for sending money to friends and family, which is free for both of us and which I think is as safe for them as sending a check, and is safe for me (I think).

Why not use good old bank transfer?

With my last payments for woods and luthiery to Canada and USA the fees were really passable. ( Around ~ 20-30 bucks for altogether transfering four grands or so.) Not as good as it used to be, with banks now milking from both sender and recepient, but way less expensive than with any new age hoax.

( I roughly remember from some other transaction with a US boutique manufacturer years ago, that apparently some or many US banks force their customers in CC usage, by requesting fees outrageously for normal bank transfers, but I suppose that biz conducting folks should be informed enough to not let themselves gagged by such contracts / banks.)

I am having so much fun with UPS. I couldn't cancel the claim I initiated on their website: To cancel it I would need a claim number, and they didn't give me one. They responded to the claim, not by talking to the customer or examining the guitar; they found a package on her porch, which contained a beach umbrella base that was sent to her from overstock.com BY FED EX and slapped a "return" label on it and shipped it to my porch. I called UPS and asked them to take it away and they picked it up 2 days later and supposedly shipped it back to the owner. Now they have billed me for this shipping!

That's exactly how this customer paid, Ruphus. But normally it's nice to save the fee.

Good grief Ethan .. your UPS saga is getting longer and sounds like there will be more to come ... i would say you shouldnt have given them orders to take anything anywhere ...thats why they are billing you , cos you said ... do this ..
you just point out their mistake and they make the decision , so there is no chance of billing as you never told anyone to do anything .. just passed on information ...

How FedEx got mixed in is incredible ..
I hope you post the next move , this is now my favourite soap...
