Jose Tanaka's online lessons
I am a beginner currently working from Graf-Martinez Volume 1. It is a good start, but I find it kind of boring. Where I live I could one find only one Flamenco guitar teacher, I went to his site and his playing and method of teaching did not really inspire me. In looking at online lessons I found Jose Tanaka's site. It seems like a good option for me. I admire his playing and the material I saw he seems to explain technique well and in detail. Also being that he is in L.A. I could drive up there in about 1.5 hours to take a private lessons if needed. I thought I read in one post that Jose moved from California, but I could not find anything to confirm this. His web site says lessons are given at Downey, CA. I also heard that he had abandoned his online lessons was not providing any updates. I am not sure this matters to me if the material that is currently there is what I need for learning and progressing and the price is very reasonable. I think getting feedback on my playing is important and i don't know if that option exists right now. Thanks for any input.

Hey I joined his site but found out and can see he has abanded the site. If you looking for feedback while learning then I wouldn't suggest his site although the material is still online.

Hi, I have just lurked here for a few years, but I finally feel compelled to post. In other threads, other posters have reiterated this, but it is worth saying again. Just take lessons from Ricardo Marlow. He is a great teacher and an authority on flamenco. You will learn more about flamenco in one lesson from him than messing around with books (which are not the way) and be set on the right path. In the long run, it will be much, much cheaper than your other alternatives. He sends you a video of your lesson to review so you can continually go back and review to be sure you learned everything properly. Ricardo's lessons are very reasonably priced (I would say a value) for the level of instruction you are getting. In other words, the guy is the best. Good luck!

I'll second the Ricardo Marlow love. I started out toiling with the Graf-Martinez books. 1st lesson, Sr. Marlow blew my mind with his playing and knowledge.

Guitar2000.com is a great resource for beginners. The only downside is that it is all in Spanish. But if you looking for a step-by-step course, this would be it.

I did find a local teacher that I am going to try out next Tuesday. He seems to specialize in classical and flamenco. I am sure he is not at the level at Ricardo, but since I am a beginner he might be plenty good enough to teach me. If I don't think he is a good fit I will consider Ricardo, his playing is very impressive. I am a little skeptical about Skype lessons because I am not sure the fine details of finger mechanics can be learned that way.

Do you have high speed internet connection? At least 10mbs? If so, Skype lessons are fantastic. With Ricardo's setup, you can see his finger mechanics quite well.
