No **** i was thinking of making a thread about this guy a few hours ago, porinna that is. I like his cante por bulerias , also the vid is too obviously interesting , paco so young holding the guitar traditionally and all.

That was MAGIC.

That singer can really extend a line, what an amazing sense of harmony he has.

Great, isn't it? I was rummaging for some fandanguitos and I came across Porrina - I've always liked him, he's my favourite of that singing style. I was looking at the guitar player and then I thought… wait a minute…!

Aslo known as Marques de Porrina. One of my favorite cantaores, and a fine example of great singing from someone non andaluz. His nephews also sing good but very different style, Guadiana and Ramon el Portugues. Nunez has a tangos dedicated to him and Ramon sings. Extremadura style.

Yeah it is, four times through now.

I know almost nothing about cante but it reminded me a little of this farruca the vocal of which always touches me.

Thanks I am gonna hunt some mp3's.

I know the Nunez track, I'm relistening just now to try and hear an influence and can kind of hear it. I miss Porrina's feminine endings though, at 3.50 Ramon really tries but he can't quite extend the lines the same way and they break before resolving.

Always good to have an excuse to listen to Jucal.

It is Jacinto Almaden, cante, in the farruca. I also like Porrina much, especially por bulerias and por tangos.

Thanks Carlos, I'll hunt some of his stuff down too.

Not as special as the Porrina and Paco, but here he is with Paco.

In introduction to the Portugal and Extremadura chapter of Rito y Geografia (1:21), Jose Maria Velazquez Gaztelu says that Paco and Camaron told them (the R y G team) that they absolutely had to get out to Extremadura to record the cantes out there. Interesting, too, what he says about the flamencos andaluces wanting to include these tangos Extremenos to freshen up their repertoire. It’d be interesting to know what’s going on in Badajoz now.
