I'm going to make haste with this post , i just typed out a massive one and accidentally closed this sub window.
Anyway i was hoping you guys could help me with some concerns regarding the rasguedo. I was unable to find information via prior searches on most of this stuff.
Firstly i have recently began to question my primary second nature type rasguedo that I use which is i,a,m,i - up which i switched to at some point from the standard a,m,i,i. I have not seen any player using that type of Rasg in their toque. I'm wondering if their a reason for that , and why the a,m,i,i is used much more commonly.
Also the 5 stroke rasg is now bothering me , I started practicing basic Bulerias compas about a month ago and so far what i have been doing in place of the 5 stroke rasgueado on beat 9 that goes onto beat 10 with the upstroke is something like i,a,m,i-up, i - down accented on the 10th beat.
Is that right ? or should i just be playing a 4 stroke Rasg instead of the 5 with an upstroke on beat 10 following the 4 stroke rasg on beat 9.
Most methods from utilize the pinky in rasgueados Juan martin, Manuel Granados etc, so now im kinda second guessing what i have been doing in terms of replacing a rasgueado technique with my own as i have never used my pinky.
I hope that makes sense, and thank you in advance.

I know that for me the upstroke with i before a m i is opening up new dimensions. and now that I can do rasg from the palm it is also opening up new things.
Because going up with i is usually an upbeat or beat 1 if you will it gives it more of a walztey type feel and makes you do rasgs of the upbeat which I'm starting to realize is a real important part of Flamenco. I say do what you want though just make sure your practicing your rasgs like this. Do a m i i in triplets with metronome and i a i in fours and c a m i i in triplets our sixteenth notes. And p a i in fours as well. then when you try to play those rasgs for what they are they become more even. I do think the I up a down m down i down is great for switching to other Chords kinda like in tangos. I know Ricardo is a big believer in the I up a down m down and I down so we should be too.
There is no definitive way just be yourself but be Flamenco LOL.

RE: Some Questions on Rasgueado (in reply to withinity)
Hey Edgar thanks for the response.
I should have been a bit more specific in regards to the i,a,m,i Rasgueado that I use which is a downstroke for the first i and an up stroke for the last i.
Thanks for advice in regards to the metronome its another thing i have been thinking about because thus far I have not been including any specific technique exercises into my practice i have just been practicing techniques through various compass's i know or new ones i feel comfortable learning.
That being said i think its time to implement some of these exercises played along a metronome which i rarely do since spilling water on the one i had.
When you say about doing Rasgueados from the palm do you mean non- flicked type.?

Index down, ring down, middle down, index up? Super strange & very awkward for my right hand... I would do one of these instead:

I was looking for the different rasgueos the last weeks too. I cant find anything good in doing your way. Just a,m,i down ,i up looks good for me. I see it for the best anatomical and physiological standard there.
How do you learn? Do you have a teacher or learn it from books? I use Gerhard Graf Martinez in combination with Juan Martin and Im really happy with this two in combination. I had a bit problem with the 4-finger rasgueo (with e) the first days as Martinez shows it. Couldnt get a good contact with e in the palm. Juan Martin did write different. he said that you have not to go in full contact with the palm there. So I changed for Martin and after 2 days I dont have any problems with this now.
The rasgueos are the most difficult technic for me, here in the beginning. Asa comming from steelstring I never used a kind of these technics. The now following technics are a lot easier for me and I walk on quickly. So much fun to play flamenco......

you were clear initially it's just that it goes against the natural flow to have m down then immediately i UP after....it requires, for speed and fluidity, to have the index sticking out before m even plays which ihhibits the comfy power of m stroke. I think we are all hoping you are making a typo here and simply mean you start i UP, then a-m-i down and a final i up stroke on 10....as a sub for the 5 stroke pattern of Ch-a-m-i-i....I mean we are hoping. Anyway Cepero and many others do this quite often in bulerias (i up, a m i down, i up).
RE: Some Questions on Rasgueado (in reply to withinity)
Yeah its impossible to do that Rasg without your Index sticking out but i don't find that a problem as it is the first finger you stick out for the Rasgueado. I really don't find it strange though i have decided to reincorporate a,m,i,i in addition.
As for the other thing , it wasn't a typo at all and i kinda had a hunch that it was wrong so it really was a major inquiry in my post that got lost amongst the irregular Rasgueado.
So i gotta ask again what are my options in substituting that 5 stroke Rasg from beat 9-10 starting with a downstroke within the framework of a,m,i,i < can a 4 stroke rasg like that suffice if timed correctly or am i missing something. What are my options.
@ Crossover man
I learn mainly from book methods along with the audio from Juan Martin and recently with Manuel Granados which teaches one compas at a time, but i have also found other compasses along the way on some websites or in another books that i felt comfortable learning so i took it. I think a good teacher is invaluable though because they can look at you through an unbiased eye so at some point all of us need outside guidance especially us beginners.

i down, m down, a down, i up.....I could see that. I think the one you do is awkward but if you have a good sound with it, it's fine. In the end rasgueado is personal. It's important to learn what others do but in the end it becomes a matter of taste and what works for you to make the sound and expression you want.
