Inexpensive way to sound proof a room? 
Hi,

I will be leaving to China-Beijing and we will be living in an apartment. Here in Canada I had a basement and I was practicing there and I was not worrying about bothering anybody. I am thinking of creating a small (6'x6'x6') sound proof box inside one room where I can practice whenever (and as I loud as I want) I want without bothering my wife or neighbors.

Does anybody has experience or knows if this is achievable ? Thanks

ordinarily one could go to the home depot and get foam for the wall that will sound proof a room but i believe home depot is not in china. there should be an equivalent in china. sound proofing panels can be purchased but they may be fairly expensive. a quarter of an inch of styrofoam on the walls should do the trick--you can then hang tapestries or posters of paco to complete the look.

building a 6 x 6 x 6 box may prove to be too confinding and maybe not be all that healthy (one side will need to be open to allow air in. however, if you are going the box route styrofoam may be the ticket--you could make it modular using velcro strips to fasten each adjoining side. you definitely would want to use thicker walls given they will have to stand up. you could build a three wall (of course there would be a top) "box" and have styrofoam on the building wall to act as the fourth wall--but leaving the box away from the wall about a foot to allow for air flow.

I know very little about this subject but I think that old fashioned paper egg cartons used to be used as acoustic baffles , staple overlapping onto sheets of hardboard.

If they use them in china you can beg them from local bakers or noodle shops.

You're never going to be able to build a sound PROOF room in an apartment no matter how much you spend. We've built a couple in home studios for clients at work and we even went as far as having a separate foundation from the main house and when someone's playing drums you can hear it a little. Not trying to rain on your parade just want to give you an idea what to expect.

egg cartons are thought to diffuse, and they will actually do nada for either sound proofing or dispersion.

Unfortunately it is like Lenador says. Insulating is the harder of he two acoustic jobs material wise, because it is only suspension and mass that helps. The more dense the better, and the more expensive in the same time.

However for taming acoustic guitars in apartments sound booths do a good job. I had one that insulated over 40 dB, allowing guitar playing at nights without bothering neighbours. Sold it to a trumpet player before moving.

It was two cabines in one with each having a window and a door. Sized maybe 2 m x 1m x 2 m, and it cost me over 4 grands new I think.

In other words: For temporary and inexpensice solution better to just dampen the guitar with a piece of foam or cloth at the bridge section.

Should that yet be too loud ( remember a building in Costa Rica where even that would had been too much, if wanting to not bother neighbours ), one could always go for a silent guitar.
I used to have Arias Sinsonido for travelling and found it alright.
