egg cartons are thought to diffuse, and they will actually do nada for either sound proofing or dispersion.
Unfortunately it is like Lenador says. Insulating is the harder of he two acoustic jobs material wise, because it is only suspension and mass that helps. The more dense the better, and the more expensive in the same time.
However for taming acoustic guitars in apartments sound booths do a good job. I had one that insulated over 40 dB, allowing guitar playing at nights without bothering neighbours. Sold it to a trumpet player before moving.
It was two cabines in one with each having a window and a door. Sized maybe 2 m x 1m x 2 m, and it cost me over 4 grands new I think.
In other words: For temporary and inexpensice solution better to just dampen the guitar with a piece of foam or cloth at the bridge section.
Should that yet be too loud ( remember a building in Costa Rica where even that would had been too much, if wanting to not bother neighbours ), one could always go for a silent guitar.
I used to have Arias Sinsonido for travelling and found it alright.
